Posted: 4/25/05 at 5:29pmAt this very moment, I'm sitting in my Music in the Performing Arts class while a group is giving a presentation comparing and contrasting Rent with La Boheme and BUTCHERING it. These kids know nothing. It's just totally offending me. It's not like you have to be a lover of musical theatre to do your research. They actually said that Jonathan Larson is one of the greatest living musical theatre composers. Ugh. Amateurs.

are these people theatre or music students? if so, they probably shouldn't bother leaving the house anymore. I'm hoping this is some sort of general education or elective class open to anyone, and that these kids actually don't give a crap about this stuff.
If they don't actually fancy themselves as "theatre peope" and aren't planning any kind of career with it, then it doesn't sound like they're really doing anything too bad. You need to half-ass it somewhere in your curriculum, right? And what's more fun than goin up in front of the class and improvising a 10-minute presentation in physics or trig or whatever subject, completely making up statistics as you go. For the future of theatre's sake, I hope that's what these kids are doing. And hopefully your classmates know better than to write down any of the info being spewed out.

"Greatest living American musical theater composer"????
I'd call them on it. Screw etiquette. If you can't bother to do the research, they deserve to be a bit embarassed. "You, uhh... did hear that he died, right?"
"NO! Was this recent?"

Posted: 4/25/05 at 7:08pmI'm assuming that you're a fellow student since you could type this as they were presenting. You can take solace in the fact that they'll probably fail, even if it was mind numbing.

Posted: 4/25/05 at 8:23pmThe fact that ANY discussion of musical theatre writing begins with Larsen makes me want to puke.

Posted: 4/25/05 at 8:48pmgood grief ... I will admit that I am just about a hoot and a holler away from being an old fart and am virtually a complete Rent moron to boot, but even I knew of Jonathan Larsen's death. You'd think these kids would be more aware.

*snort*
That was like when we were singing Seasons of Love in my chorus class and one of the girls didn't like the song so she said "I'm gonna have a looong talk with this guy about true song making"
...erm
My apologies, next time, throw skittles

Posted: 4/26/05 at 12:01amThe professor called them on it. I took unholy joy in their red faces. I don't expect an incredible amount of knowledge...but just when you're speaking of the creator of a musical, know what tense to use.

Posted: 4/26/05 at 12:03amGood. I love Rent and Johnathan Larson's music, but he's definitely not the greatest composer. I can't deny that I lvoe his music though.

Posted: 4/26/05 at 12:06amWell, I hope they didn't say the same thing about Puccuni

The more important point is that he's passed when they said he was living.

Hey, this is sort of off-topic, but I can proudly say that I knew about Larson's death and I also knew that RENT was based on La Boheme. I know nothing about RENT, well, very little...superficial stuff. I only know about it b/c of Idina and other WICKED actors/actresses who have done the roles.
Can anyone give a comparison/contrast of RENT and La Boheme...how they adapted certain things from the original?

Rent - She lived
La Boheme - She died
