Meanwhile, in Utah at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, a suburb of Salt Lake City, the mall was evacuated when a sign fell down and made a loud noise. People panicked and ran for cover thinking it was a mass shooter in the mall. People attending a summer concert inside the mall fled. There were no injuries, but some fights broke out during the evacuation.

This is the new reality we live in.

I second this. I've had success challenging ticket purchases at events where things went wrong. I recognize this circumstance was out of their control, but they still did not deliver the goods you purchased in full.

the difference between this and the blackout is, lets be honest, you saw the damn show. all those great actors you supposedly care about put the time in. so if you really need the dollar amount for those missed 5 minutes, then ask for a refund. but you shouldn't. its like trying to return a partially eaten birthday cake.

Earlier this year, there was a situation at the Hamilton sit-down in SF.

At the very end of the show [Around the time of "the orphanage"] there was a medical incident that was misconstrued as an active shooter situation and there was panic, a terrified rush to the doors and ultimately, evacuation.

All patrons were given a choice of replacement tickets or refund.

Did they NEED to do it, or was it required?  Probably not. But the right thing to do.
Different producers and different owners (In SF, it was SHN, which is managed by the Nederlanders) - but somewhat of a precedent.

As someone who was actually at To Kill a Mockingbird during the incident, I'd like to clarify a few things then comment on a couple.

The show started shortly after 7 PM and yes, it was still going when the incident happened. Scout was in the last few lines of her final monologue.

The house manager (or someone backstage) had access to the "god" mic and DID announce/request at least twice that everything was fine and asking us to return to our seats.  However, people don't like the idea of being trapped in a building, so started exiting.  The orchestra was chaotic (it looked to me like people were trying to get into the back/sides of the theater and people in the orchestra panicked, but most of the people in the mezzanine and balcony were fairly orderly.

By the time we got down to the Alley, people were leaving Times Square but most of the panic had passed.

Personally,  I don't feel the theater folks did anything wrong, nor do I feel that anyone is owed a refund from the producers.

I was in the front mezz, center and I just stayed in my seat.  After I knew it was not going to resume, I exited with no issue or lines. I understand people not wanting to be "trapped" but had people calmed down and sat down again, I am confident the show would have resumed. I don't expect a refund and I would be surprised if people asked for them honestly.

A couple of things:

1) As the poster said above, I do find it strange that if an "incident" was going on outside that people in the Orchestra would proceed to run outside. Tourists... not the brightest bulbs.

2) The comparison to trying to return a half-eaten cake is a wrong one. The right comparison would be returning a half-eaten cake with a hair in it. This is more like that, thus some kind of compensation should be given for not finishing the performance. Why is my comparison the right one? Because both situations are OUT OF THE PERSON'S CONTROL.
