Will shows like Spongebob who have only been doing see a gross spike due to the Tony Awards or does it usually happen only when the show wins awards? I know that I bought a ticket to the show and can't imagine that I'm the only one.

I definitely think multiple nominations spike sales. With Spongebob, though, I feel families are staying away due to the exorbitant ticket prices Broadway is now experiencing. Ticket buyers are thinking more than twice before buying tickets for a family of five.
Even if it were to win in all of its categories, I still think it would struggle at the box office...

Well, it certainly can't hurt, but noms don't seem to do THAT much at the box office. Wins, and really only the best musical/revival/play categories seems to make a BIG difference....a big enough difference to keep a struggling show alive.
While I have no interest in it, lots of people seem to love it.

Yep, we all know Sponge Bob will not win any major awards so its audience will still probably be just the young people who grew up with the TV show.
