Congrats, Governor. Tell us how it goes! "No More" is one of my favorite songs in the musical. (Of course, the Baker got the better lines in that song, but still....

He does, amasis, but the song as a whole is so great that it can make an entire audience cry.

I wouldn't say Vanessa Williams "butchered" the role. I, for one, loved her portrayl of the Witch as a "diva" and thought she was wonderful. Bernadette Peters is great, but Williams didn't get schticky and made the Witch more cunning and menacing. I absolutely loved the revival. My favorite show that I have seen.

i think the two princes/wolves could very well be the best parts in the show. They crack me up.

Well, I personally liked James Lapine's direction for the original. Comedy wise I thought it was just brilliant. And then the second act, wow, how that moved me and it was only on screen. To see it live must have been an experience. Into the Woods is a great show. Not Sondheim's BEST, BUT definately a worthy score to listen to. In my opinion it's the strongest book any of his shows have ever had (maybe ...night music). It came out the year of Phantom of the Opera, so it didn't win best musical, nor best director (that pisses me off cause James Lapine is soooo overdue for a Tony for his direction). But it did win best score and book (hell yeah!) and best actress (the increidble Joanna Gleason. Can't wait for DRS) Wach the original cast on video. The one who was truly magnificent and stood out (in my opinion) was little red ridinghood. Man was she great,

I, like the Quibbler, loved the revival. I think that the only possible weak link is Adam Wylie as Jack. Not to say that he is bad, but I prefer the actor from the original cast.
Vanessa Williams, I am enamored with. I thought that she was perfect. Sure, the music sounded different for her, but think about it. Sondheim wouldn't have had it done differently if he didn't like it.
I do wonder, however, how someone like Marin Mazzie or Carolee Carmello would have interpreted the role. Either of them would have been perfect and more like Bernadette.

one of my favorite musicals ever. "I know things now" "moments in the woods" and "last minute" are brilliant. "Moments..." is one of my favorite showtunes ever written.

I've always found No One is Alone incredibly moving. Beautiful show. Which is why i bought the dvd

Okay don't get me started up in here. VANESSA WILLIAMS DID NOT BUTCHER ANY ROLE IN INTO THE WOODS!!! DAMN RIGHT I'M YELLING TOO!! I saw BOTH the ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST and THE REVIVAL and they BOTH have their PLUSES and MINUSES. They were both great productions. VANESSA WILLIAMS is a wonderful performer and the production she headlined was far from BLASPHEMOUS. What's truly BLASPHEMOUS is the TRIPE that is attracting PABLUM PUKING TOTS that have NO IDEA what REAL MUSICAL THEATRE IS ALL ABOUT.

Oh dear, oh dear . You know Marquise is upset when almost the whole message is in caps... I saw both, too, Marquise. I just didn't like her in the role, and even though I love her voice, I didn't like it for ITW. Glad you enjoyed her performance, though.

All I know is that whenever something from the revival comes on AccuRadio, I always decide it's now time to turn the thing off (while muttering "that's not the REAL Into the Woods").

I enjoyed the revival. It had some great performances (Kerry O'Malley and Laura Benanti to be specific), and was visually stunning. Vanessa Williams did not butcher the role. She did it differently, however I am more partial to Bernadette Peters' witch. I think that the if the costumes and sets of the original were something like the revival they could have taken away a few minuses. I personally found the set for the original rather plain. And the costumes, though nice, were much more, what's the word?, oh hell i'll make one up, fairy tale-ish in the revival.

Some people hated that Williams didn't use a funny, crackly old lady voice as the Witch in Act 1. But why should she? Just because the curse made her LOOK old and ugly, she doesn't neccesarily have to SOUND like a hag!

All right, when I scan some of the posts above and see the word "butcher" being quoted over and over again, I'll have to assume that it's the word choice that people are bristling about. I very rarely resort to hyperbole, and that comment was one -- that was a lapse on my part. I'll just revise:

Some will still disagree with the opinion. I know some of you like her performance as the witch; I didn't enjoy it at all.

I saw the revival a few seasons ago, and it was my first Sondheim show I ever saw. I liked it, but I wasn't amazed by it. Now the OBC, I could watch that video for hours and not get tired of it.
It's a fun show, but out of all the Sondheim stuff, it's not my favorite.

I enjoy the original more than the revival. Some of the changes they made weren't necessary, but it's not awful. The original just has a better cast.
I really dislike the ending they tacked on to "On the Steps of the Palace", but Ms. Benanti makes up for it with her glorious last note.
