Posted: 3/31/05 at 4:17pmFor the 2002 revival of "Into the Woods", why did they decide to have two wolves?!
#1re: Into the Woods question
Posted: 3/31/05 at 4:18pmBecause it's pointless, unnecessary, and different from the original. Like the entire production.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 4:20pmBecause they couldn't leave well enough alone.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 4:22pmYeah, I've always wondered the same thing. How did they work out the whole two wolves thing? Can someone give a brief synopsis of the new "2 wolves" storyline??

Posted: 3/31/05 at 4:25pmThis is what happens when you have the same man who directed the original production also direct the revival. I love ITW but I think that's where the show failed. It should have had a brand new director with some fresh ideas on how to do the show in a new way but retain it's sincerity. I have a feeling Lapine said to himself: "Hmmm...What small changes can I make to the show so it's technically a revival?"

Posted: 3/31/05 at 5:03pmI think that was originally Peppermint Patty, but she wasn't a very good character. Or something. Maybe they wanted to make the show more gender-balanced?

Posted: 3/31/05 at 5:04pmI think it was because there were two Princes. One was underused.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 5:50pmThe first wolf (who later became Cinderella's Prince) started the song, and then during the music break, three little pigs came out, followed by the second wolf (Rapunzel's Prince). The wolves admired each other's prey, sang, howled, and went on their way.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 7:11pmFor the most part Sally is Peppermint Patty from the original but some of the lines etc. have been changed being that Sally is Charlie's brother. I've seen it both ways; doesn't make much of a difference to me I like the show.

The original YAGMCB had "Patty" - NOT "Peppermint Patty". The character of "Peppermint Patty" did not exist in the comic strips until the 1970's - after YAGMCB was written. The character of "Patty" - a cute girl with a reddish pageboy haircut and a plaid dress - was in the very first Peanuts strip in the mid-1950's. She was usually with her best Friend Violet, who had black hair. The first strip featured Paty, Violet, and Charlie Brown. The character of Lucy, Linus (who started as a baby) and Snoopy (who started as a puppy who's thought balloons contained nothing more than question marks and exclamation points) all came along later in the first year of the strip's existence. Sally Brown first appeared in the 1960's, Peppermint Patty in the early 70's, and Marcy (Peppermint Patty's future lesbian life partner) in the late 70's.
The original Patty and Violet are featured in the first TV special, "A Charlie Brown Christmas". They were phased out a few years later.

Posted: 3/31/05 at 10:14pmIn the original concept there were 2 wolves and the 3 little pigs.... i believe..... wasn't it supose to be foreshadowing... the 2 wolves on the prowl / 2 princes on the prowl.......

someone got it... I think it was to use both princes more.
And I know that there is something on broadway.com {videos} that answers this question. I think one of the wolves explains why they decided to go with two wolves for the revival... maybe?
Check the link.....................
This should be the right link

I just saw the video (thanks, btw). Does anyone else think Vanessa Williams' delivery of the Witch's Rap in the clip is AWFUL?? Was her performance in the revival like this? It's like her Witch stepped off of a Disney parade float.

Posted: 4/1/05 at 8:22pmI think Vanessa made a wonderful Witch.I enjoyed her very much, she wasn't Bernadette but she did a good job.

I thought Vanessa was wonderful.... BUT i didn't like the revivals take on the which.... they made her too "modern" i think.... But Vanessa's singing voice was heaven ( at least during closing week it was) and the rap was HILARIOUS...... I really do think she did an awsome job....
And Bernadette did just as well in the origional, but then again her's was a diffrent take..... and i preffer the origional concept of the witch.....
so Yes Vanessa Williams was great in the role...

Posted: 4/1/05 at 8:51pmMy opinion is, they added the other wolf to take away the sexual innuendo like in the original. Originally the wolf, played by Cinderella's prince, represented animal lust (like the prince represented human lust) so they added another wolf so that they would appear to be hungry animals wanting food instead of one lusting after Red Riding Hood.
