So apparently Hamilton is popular enough that it was high up in the Billboard charts according to Lin Manuel Miranda's Facebook page. Does this mean that is popular enough to play on mainstream radio along with Taylor Swift and Adele? that would be pretty amazing,Have you ever heard it on the radio/ I've never heard a song from a musical on normal radio and I don't listen to the radio that much these days, so I was just wondering,

I'm assuming the local AM/FM bands as opposed to something like SiriusXM? But doesn't Billboard have a separate cast album chart or something?

Good point, but I mean like not XM radio,The kind of radio that the average person might hear driving to work. I wonder do people who don't like musicals and listen to Kanye West and Beyonce now also listen to Guns and Ships and Helpless, for example? Is it like in maybe the 60s when popular singers recorded musical theater songs and so people who weren't into musicals might know the songs?because that would be really amazing if it could get people who don't like musicals to listen to one.According to Miranda, Hamilton was #! on the Billboard rap charts?

The closest we've got was the Idina "Let It Go" getting regular airplay.
I don't think we'll hear songs from the cast album on the radio, if popular artists record songs for the remix album that's what we'll hear (and I definitely think we will).

I think Adele would be amazing at "Burn" If that happened.

While I'm not sure we'll hear it on "regular" radio (I think I remember RENT back in the day?), it's pretty impressive that it's actually #5 on the rap album chart at this moment: http://www.billboard.com/charts/rap-albums

They made a joke about Hamilton on SNL, so the radio needs to catch up.

According to Lin's tweet, it will be number 1 on the rap charts when they all update today. I'm guessing this is due to the Jimmy Fallon/60 Minutes features. Very, very impressive.

It debuted big on the BB 200 but then fell fast, which is unsurprising.
When Lin releases the mixtapes with popular artists covering the songs you may start to hear them on radio and subscription services.

So, which songs do you think would be more likely to be played?

I think the songs most likely to get AirPlay are the ones not wholly rap - Helpless, Wait for It, My Shot, and The Room Where it Happens.
Though I would be more than thrilled for Guns and Ships to make an appearance.

First of, after the Tonys, it will skyrocket in terms of the Billboard. On guns and ships just being rap. It has its beginning (emerge victorious from the quagmire waving Betsy Ross' flag higher) and end that are not rap. I could see My Shot, Burn, Guns and Ships and The Schuyler Sisters all on radio. I don't think Helpless could do it, as they would need a radio edit because of its length.

It's Number 1 on the Rap charts, which no other OBCR had ever done (obviously), but chart positions don't just go by airplay anymore. It's a combo of airplay (which I'm guessing Hamilton gets very little of) and SPS, or Streams Plus Sales. Their SPS numbers are what's allowing this album to achieve this feat. I think it's also going to be back in the Top 20 of the Hot 200 this week. Nothing too sneeze at for a Broadway album.

In the meantime, "She Used To Be Mine" from the Sara Bareilles Waitress album, has been on the Adult Contemporary Top 40 for six weeks, representing national airplay. It's the first song from a new musical to chart in 30 years, since "One Night In Bangkok" from the Chess concept album in 1985.

Does anyone else in the NYC listening area remember WABC-FM back in the late '60s or early '70s or so? When I was a teen, I used to listen solidly to that station, as it played full cast albums all day, usually one per hour. (Yes, believe it or not.) I was so disappointed when the station changed formats (and probably call letters, too). I miss it to this day. I believe it turned into a country music station.
Around the same time, Lee Jordan on WCBS-AM had a Sunday (morning, I think) show called "The Sound of the Show." He used to interview Broadway personalities and play lots of selections from OCRs.
How I wish "regular radio"--as the original poster phrased it--resumed such programming.
As to HAMILTON, with each national exposure, I think the songs mentioned above could certainly find their way onto free radio playlists.

Posted: 11/17/15 at 10:55amBack in 1982, "And I Am Telling You" from the Original Broadway Cast Recording of DREAMGIRLS was in the Top 40 so it was heard regularly on FM radio stations. They did a re-edit to the ending of the song so it didn't have the theatrical long note ending but a repeated phrasing as it faded. Some urban radio stations even played the cast recording's "One Night Only" track - with Jennifer Holliday's slow tempo intro segueing into the uptempo disco Deena Jones & The Dreams version.

It would have to be a huge mainstream artist for Hamilton to get on the radio and even with the Mixtape, I don't really see it happening. Though just putting this out there: Cabinet Battle #1 feat. Drake and Meek Mill
Beyonce's "Listen" got some airplay, does that count?
Billboard 200 is a combo of streaming and sales, airplay only counts for the Hot 100. Rap albums I believe only counts sales so while it's cool that Hamilton got #1, it makes sense since rap is the most streamed genre. It's currently sitting at #38 on the Top 100 which isn't bad for it's 7th week on the chart. It will be interesting to see if they can get to #1 after the Tonys.

I would love to hear Hamilton on the radio, but I don't think I see it happening yet. I just checked Billboard, and What's Inside: Songs from Waitress is number 10 this week (its first), which is a higher peak than Hamilton achieved (I'm kind of sad about that). That clearly isn't a cast recording, but still, musical theater-esque music in the top ten on the chart? Shocking.

And Sting covering The Last Ship songs probably sold more units than the Last Ship OBCR. Unlike things often don't end up being easy to compare on a 1:1 basis...

I remember hearing "And I'm Telling You," "One Night in Bangkok," and "Memory" on "regular radio."
As a young kid, I remember songs from Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair on the radio as well.
I also remember when Judy Collins' version of "Send in the Clowns" was on the charts and the radio.

If you want show tunes kind of radio that is AM/FM, try your local college stations. It will probably be around a four to twelve hours a week, and they are really good to introduce you to new/obscure work, remind you of one's you haven't heard in a while, and things that are great that you know and love. They can have a lot of promotional donate stuff, or none at all. Even if you do not listen, veiw what they played. Here is the link to one of Boston's, called Standing room only. You can also stream somehow through their website, or view their recently played (Go to the correct time and date to find the list)
