Is Legally Blonde the Sweet Charity for a new generation?
They are both about naive and gullible females trying to show the world who they really are. Any body else see any similarities?

Posted: 5/4/07 at 6:51pmI hope not. I love the story of Sweet Charity. The story could happen. Legally Blonde is more like a satire.

no, not really.
Elle is a spoiled rich girl who only goes to Harvard for a boy, and then decides to stay, only to keep an eye on him.
Charity is a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, who can't get a break because of what she does for a living.
I understand how you can make a connection, (they both want love , but can't attain it) but these ladies come from completely different worlds and have no sensibilities in common at all.
Elle Woods is more like Galinda.

Mmmmm, Elle Woods is like Galinda? Say what?
I don't find any connections there either.

Posted: 5/4/07 at 8:28pmIt's more like The Unsinkable Molly Brown for a new generation. Complete with the fish out of water having to prove herself, to a wobbly middle of the road vehicle that will be popular but not have a shelf life.

Questions of quality of staging or music aside--I see no real similarity. One is a woman, sligthly past her prime, who is continually thwarted by life and disappointed--albeit she manages to make her way through and Survive.
Blonde is about a young woman proving herself to absolutely fantasitc, can't be argued results

SWEET CHARITY is built to last.
LEGALLY BLONDE will have a healthy run, but i cant imagine a LEGALLY BLONDE revival in the next century.

Posted: 5/5/07 at 1:31amI think Legally Blonde will end up kind of like The Wedding Singer. It will have a bunch of groupie fans a few year run (which Wedding Singer did not have) and then it will never be revived again. I can't see the Red Bull, JetBlue, UPS, Tiffanys product placement working in the next fifty years.

No. Sweet Charity, aside from its book problems, has one of the finest musical comedy scores ever crafted and at its helm was Bob Fosse. Jerry Mitchell, while being talented, is nowhere near the brilliance of that man.
And it also starred Gwen Verdon. Laura Bell Bundy can't really hold a candle to her either.

Posted: 5/5/07 at 10:00amGlinda doesn’t really get her way though. She loses her best friend and the guy she loves. She has the power she always wanted, but at a great cost. Elle finds true love and wins the respect of her classmates.

Sweet Charity's story is bittersweet. Legally Blonde is so hooped on RedBull, that it floated up past Tommy Tune's field of vision a few months ago.
So no.

Thank you, Tom!
No, I really don't see how a show whose opening act is called "Ohmigod" could be compared with the fantastic and brilliant Bob Fosse/Gwen Verdon/Cy Coleman/Dorothy Fields/Neil Simon collaboration that is SWEET CHARITY.

Yes, it is, in a way.
Like Sweet Charity, Legally Blonde is bound to have a shelf-life for many years to come. I'm sure it'll end up being one of the hottest prospects on the high school/college/regional circuit. It's got a large cast, an upbeat score, and is an overall crowd pleaser. It's a quintesstential story of girl power - even the bimbo can get to Harvard. Positive morals for any high school.
In a way, Sweet Charity is satire, as well. Moreso than Blonde.
BTW - Ray, it's "Omigod," not "Ohmigod."
