There are productions of NEXT TO NORMAL *everywhere*. It's almost too much.

What other shows recently have had such a strong regional life shortly after closing on Broadway?

A cast of six, a unit set, only need a few musicians AND a prize-winning show - this definitely would find a home with theatre companies that might not have the resources to do a some of the bigger shows like RENT, etc.

"There are productions of NEXT TO NORMAL *everywhere*. It's almost too much."

This statement doesn't make any sense to me. These are local/regional productions, presumably all with different audiences. They are not competing with each other, but each bringing the show to a different group of theatregoers. How is that "almost too much"? It's not as if a revival of the show were opening within a year or two of closing in the same location, though I for one wouldn't even object to that in this particular case.

I think what's most impressive about NEXT TO NORMAL's post-Broadway life is the calibre of performers that have been getting involved in the show. So many of these licensed productions have been getting Broadway people in - Andrea Burns recently, Kendra Kessebaum and Joe Cassidy in the most recent one BWW has highlighted. It's also been embraced internationally in a way I wasn't expecting.

All of that, and we still don't have the show in the UK Is NEXT TO NORMAL'S post-Broadway life more successful than usual?

TimesSquareRegular hits the nail on the head. In addition to it being a recognizable, prizewinning show, it has many practical factors that make it appealing to a wide variety of companies.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

A lot of theatres did THE LAST FIVE YEARS when it became available. Small cast, small orchestra, minimal set and costumes. Even if it doesn't sell a ton of tickets, it's a small gamble.

Adam, it was silly/stupid joke..I'm almost sick of hearing about them, but agree it has no real meaning.

I love the show and I'm thrilled that it is finding such success after Broadway, but I agree that it's almost over-kill! We've already had three local productions within a 50 mile radius this year, some who shared costumes and cast members. Not to mention the other dozen or so within a few hours drive. I really enjoy the show, but I think I could do without another local production for a while. Just my two cents. Is NEXT TO NORMAL'S post-Broadway life more successful than usual?
