Is Pal Joey Worth Seeing?

I love classis musicals but with the bad reviews I'm rethinking getting tickets to this show. I've never seen the movie version and only know the show from the '95 Encores Recording. So is it worth seeing? Also, does anyone know if Stockard Channing signs at the stage door?

I am in the same boat with you. I love Classic Musicals like Rodgers & Hart. I heard negative word of mouth but I am still going to watch it. I am NOT writing any reviews..I will just go there to ENJOY it! I will go there like its the first musical Ive seen in my life (like any other unsuspecting tourist)

I know..it has mixed reviews, but this show has not been revived on NYC stage for like 30 years..who knows when is it going to be onstage again?? Cant wait that long.. I am NOT taking my chances.. I just bought a ticket and I am seeing it!

It IS worth seeing, just not at full price.

btw- you can get a cheap ticket like $25.00 from broadwaybox~that's what I did!

I haven't seen it, but Martha Plimpton is in it, so yes.

I'd say no. The material feels stale and lifeless. Risch is good, but Channing cant really sing.

Having seen it with a Hiptix ticket, I would say yes, but not at full price. If you get a discount, go see it, it's something that is going to be talked about and discussed for quite some time, I think.

I personally loved Martha Plimpton. There was something about how deep and husky her voice was that just appealed to me for some reason, especially since her mother's version of Frank Mills had popped up on my iPod during the subway ride in to the city that night, and the absolute difference in their voices was just astounding to me.

Stockard Channing, no, not a great singer, but I disagree that she is the worst thing to have happened to musical theatre, as some people on here would have you believe. Obviously they did not catch Melanie Griffiths in Chicago, or they have completely blocked that one from memory.

I say yes. The script does interesting things with the original. Matthew Risch may be only pretty good as Joey, but for me, with three wonderful ladies surrounding him, "pretty good" was more than good enough. I will be somewhat surprised if Martha Plimpton doesn't win a "Featured Actress in a Musical" Tony for this performance. Great to hear "Bewitched,Bothered & Bewildered" as delivered by Stockard Channing. Sure it would have been great to have Harry Connick or Hugh Jackman, but I liked the production and recommend it.
