"Mary Poppins is a gazillion trillion times better. Disney always has better shows than everyone else, no different this time."
Get off the boards. Spring Awakening did get raves but, I have heard equally amazing things about GG. I like SA a lot and want it win. I think SA it will win.

Grey Gardens, the best musical of the year, will and should win. It's not like it has a Spamalot sort of thing competing against it as Light in the Piazza did. It has a few lame movie adaptations, an overblown poperetta, an edgy rock opera that didn't deserve the reviews it got, a Disney show and a Kander and Ebb musical. Its only competition I think will be Curtains, a very good show with a lot of nostalgia floating around it (one of the last Kander and Ebb shows, Fred Ebb's death and so forth). Grey Gardens is an incredible show. It's beautifully written, has a wonderful score, a cast that will go down in history as one of the most incredible to grace the stage of a musical and fine direction. It's also a show that could do very well on tour. It has a small cast, a rather uncomplicated set and the whole Jackie O. thing that will attract tourists. Not expensive (compared to a big splashy extravaganza) and profitable. If Spring Awakening wins, it proves how stupid the Wing has gotten. It tries to be "edgy" but it comes out staler than a year old loaf of bread.
TheatreBoy- Grey Gardens does not have "Act I Troubles." Of course, Act II is a bit more memorable with Ebersole's performance of Little Edie and the more talked about songs, but Act I, may I remind you, includes Peas in a Pod, that very good opening, Will You? among other great numbers. It's just as good as the first. Have you even seen the show?

My predications for best musical:
Grey Gardens
Spring Awakening
Revival:
Company
A Chorus Line
Apple Tree
Leading Lady:
Chenoweth- Apple Tree
Ebersole- Grey Gardens(Predicted winner)
Men-
Raul Esparza- Company(Predicted winner)
Mark Kudisch- Apple Tree
D'Arcy James- Apple Tree
PS I want Ebersole to win that Tony, she deserves it. I also would love Chenoweth to tie. Her performance in Apple Tree was the funniest performance I have ever witnessed. But Ebersole gives the performance of a lifetime in GG. I wish they could tie.
Love them both.

Mary Poppins is a gazillion trillion times better. Disney always has better shows than everyone else, no different this time.
Are you nine... or maybe ten? I guess you missed Tarzan. Someone else said it best, get off the boards. You lost all credibility with the above statement.
Grey Gardens is an incredible show. It's beautifully written, has a wonderful score, a cast that will go down in history as one of the most incredible to grace the stage
You know, if you're going to steal Ben Brantley's words, the least you can do is give him the appropriate credit. Only, he said it about Ms. Ebersole, not about the cast as a whole. The cast will not go down in history. Ebersole's performance will. And she'll be awarded appropriately, I have no doubt. GREY GARDENS is an incredible show, I agree. But so is SPRING AWAKENING. They're as different as two musicals could be, so it's hard to compare them.
It's also a show that could do very well on tour. It has a small cast, a rather uncomplicated set and the whole Jackie O. thing that will attract tourists.
Now you're stretching a bit too far. You're kidding yourself if you think GREY GARDENS is going to do well on tour. "A rather uncomplicated set," you say? I'd say GREY GARDENS' set is a heck of a lot more complicated than SPRING AWAKENING's set. And you say that the "Jackie O. thing will attract tourists." If they're "tourists", then they're seeing the show in New York from out of town. SPRING AWAKENING, like RENT, will tour and tour for years (10 years and still going). I doubt GREY GARDENS will even tour at all. I love the show to death, but it is not a show that will have a long life beyond Broadway.
Its definitely the most deserving show Ive seen so far this season but I would also agree with whoever said itd be smart to give it to Spring Awakening- its not a recognizable name like Mary Poppins or Legally Blonde so "best musical" would help ticket sales now and on the road if and when it tours. The award should naturally go to the best deserving but on the other hand some shows just dont need any further recognition to be successful- Wicked for example.
Grey Gardens is a good musical but, a lot of its praise is coming from Ebersole's performance. I don't think this show will ever tour without its two stars.
Since the producers don't have an idea about how to promote the reviews or this show.
The noms could be
GREY GARDENS
MARY POPPINS
THE PIRATE QUEEN
CURTAINS
let's hope I am wrong
Legally Blonde will have to be practically unwatchable to not get a nomination. All that aside, when, (in recent years) have the nominations been about worthiness? Maybe a performance or two gets proper recognition but we can all go on about the number of huge oversights.
CurtainPullDowner, you're always wrong. The only musical you've liked this season was THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN', which you wouldn't shut up about.

Yeah, if LEGALLY BLONDE gets fairly good reviews, I wouldn't be suprised if it was nominated
It could be an easily toured show, and the nomination would help boost business in New York and other places
By the way, is LOVE MUSIK a limited engagement or an open run?

These shows Will Get Best Musical Nods:
-Curtains
-Spring Awakening
-Mary Poppins
-?
Last Slot could be Legally Blonde or Grey Gardens. Still don't know. GG has gotten bad reviews for te show itself but good for Ebersole. Blonde could surprise us.
Shows That Will Not Have Nods And Why:
-High Fidelity-when I die
-LoveMusik-too close to the deadline, in my opinion.
-Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me-good as it is, no way.
-The Pirate Queen-Yes, it Schonberg and Boubil, but I've only heard negative reviews for the show.
>GG has gotten bad reviews for the show itself<
Not really. In fact, the reviews for the Broadway version of Grey Gardens were much more appreciative of the material than they were when the show originally opened Off-Broadway. Most of the critics seem to feel that the authors did some smart work between the Off-Broadway and Broadway runs.
I've said this before, but I think the four likely Best Musical nominees are:
Grey Gardens
Mary Poppins
Spring Awakening
Curtains
Y'all forget that Xanadu is going to open just before the deadline.
And?
DO YOU ALL READ THE GODDAMNED REVIEWS? Brantley thought the first act was improved from Playwrights Horizons. He didn't say that he hated it or thought it was bad, he said it was good and improved from before. He also gave very possitive reviews to the cast. Linda Winer of Newsday also raved about the show. Most others (with the exception of Clive Barnes, who hates pastiche, whatever the hell that means) liked it. It's by far the most original show to come on Broadway in years. Spring Awakening's lame rock interpretation of an old story pales in comparison.

ARE YOU KIDDING? GG will def. be nominated. We don't even know If LB will be nominated.

While Curtains may very well be nominated due to a weak season, unless it's had a lot of work done on it since LA I don't think it should be a front runner. I thought it had some great performances, a few good songs and an absolutely terrible book with a few good lines. Mary Poppins will almost certainly be nominated.
A weak piece by Kander and Ebb is better than most people's best.
There will have been six months time in between the end of the LA run and the start of previews for Curtains in New York. No doubt that changes will have been made.

I hope so Smaxie, my only other concern about the show is that it's very "inside theatre" I'm not sure it will appeal to a general audience. It's kind of like a less funny Producers.
Well said, jv92!
I saw Mary Poppins in London, and while it was a good show it wasn't GREAT. There is no way they would give it a Tony.
I hope Spring Awakening wins out of what we've seen so far (well, ACTUALLY I would hope Pirate Queen wins, but I know I'm the only one on that ship...pun intended lol). S.A. seems to have the most originality, and great music to boot.

I think its a little early to be putting Curtains in the mix. It hasn't even opened yet. It could be disasterous. Its too soon to call.
My vote is for:
Spring Awakening
Grey Gardens
Marry Poppins
Xandu
well so could freaking XANADU. atleast Curtians has had out of town performances.
