Is THE COLOR PURPLE still the front-runner to win Best Musical?

I don't think you can really put it anywhere as of yet, because it hasn't opened, or even started previews. And the reviews for Wedding Singer never said it was BAD, they mostly said that it needed some changes. I wouldn't count it out. Margo Lion is a smart cookie, and they've got fabulous people working on that show.

Jersey Boys will definately win the Tony Award.
The Color Purple, on the other hand, IS a disgrace and should close just like The Woman in White. The only reason why this show was created was because of freaking Oprah.

Well I would hardly call THE COLOR PURPLE a disgrace. Uninspired, maybe but hardly a fiasco on any level - and Oprah came onto the scene very, very late in the game as a producer. The show would have opened even if she weren't a named producer and people like Michael Riedel have pointed out that Oprah's name on the marquis isn't apparently the biggest selling point for people buying tickets...
And bjive - "buzz" is "buzz" and people for the most part in the industry know pretty well in advance when a show is going to be a huge hit like THE PRODUCERS or a fiasco like IN MY LIFE.
"Buzz" on Tarzan is that the show is going to be an amazing theatrical experience - which would indicate a likely nomination for Best Musical. Of course its all speculative, but any discussion of the Tony Awards at this stage in the game is.

But even it it does not win, on tour it will sell just because it is TCP. And on tour, it will not only get the regular theatregoing crowed but it will also get the African American communities that don't normally go to the theatre out to see it.

If Jersey Boys wins, I will cry...
I dont think it is very original at all. To win the Tony, I think it should all be new, different, meaningful, etc. The Color Purple does have the flaws, but it will be able to win a couple categories. Not best musical however. It seems just kind of "bland".. and is doing well because of Oprah. My personal vote goes to The Drowsy Chaperone. *crossing my fingers*. I believe it is the "little engine that could..."

*raises eyebrow* Not to be mean, but, uhm... you kidding? Woman in White has been treated by many people as nothing more than "typical Lloyd-Webber which we had MORE than our fill of back in the 80s". Having seen it in London last year, I can say that the story did very little for me and it took most of Act One for me to get in to the score, ("All For Laura" was what FINALLY grabbed me).
I wouldn't rule "Woman" out of a couple technical awards, but beyond that?? Gonna be tough.
As for Jersey Boys and the jukebox musical "thing", I agree that it's got a bit of a stigma to fight. I think, though, if they can do even a halfway decent job of getting the voters in to SEE the show (which has been a problem in the past in general- voters not even going to the shows they're voting on) then they're going to be one of the one's to beat.
I VERY much enjoyed the show and recommend it highly to friends in my theater circle here at school.

i really want TCP to win! i just think that it is a racial and "inspiring" sort of show, and i dunno, i just think it deserves it
i sorta hope tarzan wont get it, i mean, i think the show will be amazing, but disney usually gets alot of awards (exception is aida in a way)
and if TCP cant win (which i really hope it does win), then Jersey Boys...
GO COLOR PURPLE!
