Is Wicked Still Good?

Which some believe it is... but she could still be thankful for a job... right? And being cast in one of Broadway's hoittest, highest grosing musicals? But to each their own.

Posted: 9/13/05 at 11:02pmi read that article, too! i agree exactly... this goes back to the 'just be grateful to have a job AND be in a successful show' argument.

Posted: 9/13/05 at 11:21pmSee, I never understood that attitude toward the theatre. How is it not obvious that is takes FAR more talent to act on the live stage than on film? There are no retakes or computer generation on the stage. But I can see where Rue is coming from. I mean, shee has had so many successes since her Golden Girls days, starting with....hmmm

i agree jersey!! i'll always have more respect for stage performers. no re-takes, no video editing... just you and your audience and a different performance and different feeling everynight.
edit: wow whiteguy, your picture is classic lol

Posted: 9/14/05 at 9:09amI don't think Shoshana is better than Idina... The current Bway cast is great, but not as good as the first time I saw it with Idina and JLT. As for Ana, her "Defying Gravity" is the favorite of the 4 Elphaba's I've seen. The order for me is Ana, Idina (very close second), Eden, and Shoshana. All 4 have spectacular performances though...

Posted: 9/14/05 at 10:07amWicked is a fun, feel good show... For people that have seen it many times w/ different casts will think it's not as good... However, tourist are really taking on to this show and I think it's great. :)

I loved the Original Broadway Cast. I thought it was a great production of a show with a so-so score.
Then I saw it a second time with the replacements. It was a sloppy mess of a show with a still so-so score that sounded even worse when delivered by some horrible singers (cough-David Ayers-cough) and some horrible actors (cough-Shoshana Bean-cough). To say Bean is better than Menzel (who in my opinion acted the crap out of that role) is laughable.

"How is it not obvious that is takes FAR more talent to act on the live stage than on film?"
Not true. . Both need different style of talents. There are stage actors that can't do film or they overact, but they're great onstage (*cough* Chenoweth *cough*). There are film actors that can't do stage but is brilliant on the film (*cough* Denzel *cough*).
Then you have the entire blue screen acting. Doing special effect movies is pretty damn hard. Try to act while imagining what your seeing is supposed to be great, in the meantime all you see is a blue screen. Not an easy thing to do.

Posted: 9/14/05 at 11:31amI was lucky enough to see the original cast and I am seeing the touring production this coming Tuesday. It is a fun show. Great music. But after seeing it on Tuesday, I won't really need to see it again.

I find the cast now to be the best of the three I have scene. Everyone fits the parts well. You will not be disappointed. Just do not think its the greatest show ever. I love it personally but I know of many different and better shows currently on Broadway *coughDRScough*.
Oh and for Rue, Morrible is not much of a singing part so I don't dislike her for that. She just has an interpretation that isnt well regarded. She has gotten better thankfully.

still infers it was good to begin with.
It was "cute".....entertaining, but nowhere near the quality that is the book.
It is not great art........it is entertaining.

Posted: 11/15/05 at 10:54pmI know this is fairly late, but I am going to throw in my two cents about Rue. Personally, I can't stand the way she plays the part, but I think they decided to have someone that couldn't sing on purpose to kind of add to the characterization. I guess in some ways acting really weird and having that very scratchy voice "fits" Madame Morrible. It doesn't make much sense, but it's been the only reason I have been able to see why they cast her.

I understand if people just flat out don't like WICKED, but come on. It seems to me that throughout this board it's just not "cool" to like WICKED because it is the "it" show at the moment.
*insert sarcasm and snootty accent*
"Oh dahling, I am a true *theat-aah* person and I couldn't p-ahhh-ssibly enjoy such a show as WICKED."
I, for the record, thoroughly enjoyed WICKED. And I stand by that statement, dammit.

If your family aren't hard-core musical fans, then I'd think that they will definately enjoy it.
It is one of my favorite musicals, and it got me started with this musical craze, but I now think it's not that great... I mean I'm sure non-musical people who thinks they've seen lots of different shows that they think they know everything/people who are totally new to the world of musicals, might say this is the best show on the planet. I, however, don't think it's that good. There's a lot of talent, but everything (story, music, cast, choreography, etc) just doens't blend in together in my opinion.

Well, if you're going in the summer, the cast will be completely different, which is a good thing, because aside from Ben, there is no one worth writing home about in the current group.
What was announced earlier today, was that Carol Kane will be the new Madame Morrible. Her performance (which I've never seen) seemed to be generally well-received.

I just went up to NYC last week and won the Wicked lottery twice. I tried again b/c my mom was w/ me the 2nd time. Wicked is not the end all be all of Music Theatre, but then again no show is. The current cast has ups and downs. Megan Hilty is absolutely the best Glinda there ever could be. She's perfect. Shoshana Bean can't touch Idina Menzel. Rue is ok, can't sing worth a dime though. Ben Vereen is very different than Joel Grey, but I like both interpretations. David Ayers sucks. He seems like a cool guy, met him after the show, but his voice is extremely lacking and his acting is amatuer. The ensemble is fierce. Overall the show rocks. I'm a big Stephen Schwartz fan.
I agree with some people on here that just because it is the "it" show, you shouldn't not like it. Wicked is funny, has great music, a great set, costumes, coreography. I mean, the show is very good. You don't have to not like something just becuase other people like it. That's the worst reason in the world not to like something. I mean, on Wednesday I went to the Sweeny Todd matinee and loved it, then went to Wicked that night and loved it as well. Sondheim and Schwartz are obviously two people from different worlds. Just go out and enjoy theatre. That's what it's there for.

Posted: 11/16/05 at 2:18amCoolkid, I understand where you are coming from. I was more of a casual fan of theatre before Wicked and I had such a great time that I really started to go to see different shows and partake of the whole theatre experience. I too after seeing it several times still do not believe it is the best musical of all time (what show can be) but I am indebted to the show for rekindling that love of theatre (and kindling that of so many youngsters as well)
