Everyone is entitled to his/her own oppinon. Do not bash a broadway production, Its not fair to those who adore it. Wicked is highly recommened, people are just mad that this show is getting so much attention. The fans get kind of crazy sometimes, but as times rolls along so will the interest in other productions. This show is very important to me. Its worth every penny.
P.S. DOn't dis the flying machine! It kills the magic!

I've seen Wicked twice. The first time was because someone offered me a ticket and I thought, "Sure...why not...it's free" The second time was because I thought it was so fantastic, I felt like I needed to see it again (and I scored big time on the lottery---first try!)
There are its fanatics and its critics (like anything else). Do I think some of the libretto and the lyrics are hoky, yes. However, I enjoy the music very much. Although, I do have to agree with someone who posted earlier about how it is highly dependent on the performers. From this board however, I 've heard good things about the touring cast and I saw Stephanie Block in The Boy from OZ and thought she was talented.
Ultimately what made me like it so much, was that I didn't really know too much about it and it was nothing like I expected. I love how it turns something so deeply embedded in American pop culture on its ear and has you scratching your head, like "Yeah why was that in the Wizard of Oz? I found it to be clever, inventive and the performances were absolutely amazing. I was like, "Wow these girls can sing!"
The second time I saw it, since I already knew the story, allowed me to focus more on the other elements--the costumes, lighting, set design, etc. which were all really beautiful as well as the performances beyond just the singing---the nuances of the characters that sometimes get overshadowed by their big numbers.
Anyway, I am defeating my whole purpose in posting this by talking so much. What I wanted to say was, you need to go into shows with an open mind and the best way to usually do that is through as little information as possible.

I fail to see how it's unfair. Everyone can have their own opinion, especially when it comes to the arts. Also, I haven't witnessed any bashing.
I think WICKED has exactly what it takes to be a successful musical. It has special effects, glittery costumes and feeds America's fascination with the Wizard Of Oz. I really like the music but I don't think by any means it will become a classic. It's nice and entertaining, like Hairspray but I think it was perfectly marketed. It's a good show, just not an amazing show.

I don't like hearing negative things about a production that took so much time and effort to put on. And wait if you really love broadway can you not see the magic when its being performed?

I'm afraid to see what will happen when it closes on Broadway and gives community theaters and schools the rights to the show. With the right cast, the vocals are amazing, but that's what makes the show for me. Without that, I don't think it's as strong.

I hate to break it to you, thenextfiyero, but it is most likely a cherry picker-like apparatus. How do they hide it, you ask? Well, all of that excess fabric blow Elphaba has a purpose... it masks the platform. And the lighting helps, too... There is a spot on her face and lights below. If you look at pictures, you'll notice that from her waist down, there are no lights on her. This is probably to hide the "magic".

If you want to know what most people thing, just look at it's success. Personally I do think its "that great" I love everything about it: The story, the music, the cast, the costumes, the set, etc

I don't know if this question has already been answered (didn't have the patience to read through all the posts)
Orchestra tickets are only $125 if you're sitting in the center front section. They're $85 on the sides. I bought mine for 85 and I'm sitting 4th row just a few seats from the center so I got lucky!!
Personally I loved the show! It's all peoples opinions. Some people are going to love it, some are going to hate it. Thats the way the world works. I just wish people wouldn't keep insisting their opinions are the "right" ones. When people see a show they should be able to think whatever they want to about it. Good or bad. Anyway, I hope you and your kids have a good time!

I saw this show in SF when it was "pre broadway". It was ok; no one there seemed overly excited about it either. There certainly were no mobs of people by the stage door waiting for the cast to come out.
I remember thinking as I left the theater that none of the music was memorable. I also remember the comments in the audience about "the point of the dragon". I still don't get what the dragon was all about. Is it still used in NY?

Stephanie and Kendra both have beautiful voices so if nothing else, you'll enjoy hearing them. But as others have said, you will get people who loved it and people who hated it. It's basically everyone's own personal preferance.

I saw Wicked a few months ago, and must say that it's a great show. In terms of theatricality, the music is wonderful, the production design is fun to look at, but nothing special, and the cast members, some who have left the show, were superb. Unfortunately I have to say that the book is fairly weak, and the lyrics leave much to be desired and sometimes don't make sense. I'm sometimes left thinking "did they just need something to rhyme with the line before?" I, however, highly recommend this musical, Wicked really is a wonderful, highly-entertaining, and at times even touching musical. I have seen hundreds of musicals throughout my life, and honestly, if you have the opportunity to see this show...Don't pass it up!
ENJOY!
