Posted: 4/4/05 at 4:06amYes, I think it was. Then I think they either moved it to or revived it at The Palace, but I could be completely wrong. There's actually a DVD of that out now.

Posted: 4/4/05 at 4:11amAbout 22 years ago, my husband (a New York native) took me (a Los Angeles native) to stay in the city. We dumped our bags at the cheapest hotel we could find (the Edison) to traipse around the city. Oh Calcutta! was playing in the theater located in the lobby. I thought it so strange that a New York show would be done in the nude! And now I find out it was running FOREVER! It just makes me laugh to see what kinds of things the American public will connect with and maintain as popular! At the time I did NOT have any desire to see such a show. It just seemed so vulgar. Was I wrong? Did I miss anything?

Never saw it - too young. However, nudity doesn't always automatically make something vulgar....
And if it does, some of the most fun and exciting things are those that are vulgar!

Posted: 4/4/05 at 4:26amI agree. Nothing wrong with nudity. We all have it. It just seemed out of place. You have to understand that it was my first time to Broadway. I always had a dream of going to New York City and I was finally there. I was gawking at how TALL the buildings were. You know, looking like a real tourist and all. I thought everything about the theatre district was paved in gold and look-alike Gene Kellys were singing on every street corner. Kind of like tourists who come to L.A. and want to see the intersection at Sunset and Vine. Just a street corner.

$125 for orchestra seats? That's more than my orchestra seats cost when I saw it on Broadway! Is the TOUR really that great?
And I totally would suggest seeing it in the orchestra with your children at least once, just to get the full effect of the costumes, the set, and stuff like that.

Posted: 4/4/05 at 6:37amWicked is an amazing show its a truly great story with absolutely fabulous music! It gives you a whole different feel to the world of Oz and the story of the Wicked Witch you thought you new. I think its one of the best musicals to ever be on broadway

Posted: 4/4/05 at 10:22amIt's hard to judge how good something is or if it's the best because we all just have different tastes and just because Wicked happens to be one of my favorite shows, it does not mean that it's the best. But I did love Wicked. There was something about the first time I saw it, but I was just astounded and incredibly moved, it just had some odd effect on me. I've seen it twice more, have tickets for a fourth time, and I loved it each time. I of course would highly recommend it, but if you're just looking for an entertaining night, I can promise you it at least qualifies at that. Enjoy!

Wicked was cute and fun and visually spectacular, but not something I would count as a favorite. Reading the novel first really had a lot to do with my impression of the musical and I found the book disappointing (though it definitely had some humorous moments).
I saw the commercially released video of Oh Calcutta and it was nothing more than a risque Carol Burnett Show with nudity. It's just sketch comedy with corny jokes and screwball comedy. The music is forgettable. The only interesting part of the show was the naked "pas de deux", which was well-choreographed. I'm sure it was quite edgy for its time, but the material is dated and wouldn't fly nowadays.

Wicked is honestly one of my least favorite shows ever. I consider myself somewhat of a Schwartz fan since I love pippin, children of eden etc... But I find this score to be one of his worst. While it has some AMAZING numbers it also has some terrible ones. I find the show very uneven, with moments of absolute sheer perfection, balanced with moments of akwardness, huge plot holes, and absolute ridiculousness. The aspect of the show i enjoyed the most was the original cast. The way they worked off of each other was amazing. That being said I have not seen the show since the original cast left, and honestly I have no desire.
Somewhat of a spoiler:
Defying gravity while it is a wonderful power ballad lost a lot to me when I could see her standing on the cherry picker and levitating on stage, rather then flying! To me this defeated the purpose of defying gravity since she is still standing on a cherry picker!
I found the show over produced. There are many aspects of the set that are never refered to in the musical and therefore detract from the plot. (ie. the dragon clock from the book).
I found the choreography to be wonderful modern dance that in no way fit the show.
I did enjoy myself seeing the show but as I said it is one of my least favorite shows ever.

It's garbage. Don't throw your money away. Sell the tickets and use the money to travel to New York or Las Vegas and see Avenue Q.

Posted: 4/4/05 at 1:08pmJust as I said earlier, these later posts prove that while a HUGE number of people find the show an extraordinary emotional journey, there are those who just don't get the adoration, and react accordingly. Go, do go, and you can let us know how you feel after you've seen it!

Posted: 4/4/05 at 2:55pmI also enjoyed the show. I saw it a year ago on Broadway and I still listen to the music. It is highly entertaining and I would suggest seeing it from the orchestra section. I hear that the monkeys do not fly above the orchestra and the side staircases have been removed for the touring show. I also heard that the big witches hat in the opening has been removed also. Interesting to see what they will do instead since I have seen that picture in promos in a few places. I am seeing it in Denver in September and I am paying top dollar to see it. It's an enjoyable evening at the theatre. I felt I got my money's worth.

Posted: 4/4/05 at 3:36pmYeah its a lot of fun, still some lyrics dont make sense but its a musical and they can get away with it. Like in thoroghly modern millie when they have a tap break during forget about the boy. And it is different from the wizard of oz-like the monkeys are happy that the witch died in the movie, ya know.

It's not that great a show, but it has quite decent songs (some great), fairly abysmal lyrics and an interesting premise.
It would have been better, and more true to the book if Sondheim wrote it, but that's another thread...
It's not great, but neither's Beauty and the Beast, but kids love that...
And I don't think it is up to the standard of Mr. Schwartz' other works...
