(Yes, yes, for some of you: OMG, how dare they play a few notes that are different from the usual curtain call music that happens ever other show, how inappropriate to ruin it for everyone who just so happens to be seeing Hamilton for the first time tonight.)
for the record, I've always found the da - da - da part to be weirdly directed. I remember the first time I saw Hamilton at The Public wondering if that "everybody" meant we the audience are or are not supposed to do the da - da - das with the King.
"
I'm not sure if the audience singing along with the da-da-das is unique to this performance because when I saw it in May many around me sang along when he said "everybody." I agree it's kind of confusing in the moment because you're not really sure if you're supposed to or not, but I'll admit it was fun to join in.
"
He says "everybody" to the side and then all the soldiers come out. I never took it as an invitation to sing.
"
Interesting. When I saw it, it appeared he was still facing the audience and speaking to them rather than off to the side.

It'll die down now that Lin's left. I don't expect it to flare back up again to any major level until they announce a movie version, but that's not going to happen anytime soon.

"Why is there so much snarky nastiness on all the Hamilton threads? If you don't like Hamilton or its fans, why participate in the threads?"
I think it's easy to understand. Many people are sick of the gargantuan hype and overpraise accorded this show, and are stating as much. They also chafe at the groupthink nature of the mega media push behind it, and that is also given expression in these threads. Nobody likes to be told how they have to think. And when you think about it, really, where else would one express those thoughts other than in threads about the show --- in threads about overtures or theatre memorabilia?

"Good grief. I thought Playbill was one of the last bastions of legitimate theatre journalism we had."
This is a joke, right? They are right under BWW at this point. Nobody edits or even copy edits anything on Playbill.

For once you stated the truth. Now if only you would heed your own advice. Not holding my breath. You couldn't even manage this post without your typical, trolling, foundation based on your delusion that your thoughts are the "correct" ones. Very few people here have ever suggested that you or others who do not like the show are "wrong" in your opinion. But many have suggested you are dead wrong about the intellectually dishonest notion that it is "overpraised." But then again most folk's taste is not that of a 3rd grader.

Anything popular that one dislikes is going to be "overpraised" to them. It's not intellectually dishonest, it's just an opinion.

There is a big difference between stating your opinion on the issues you raise vs. attacking other people and their opinions. My 12 year old was reading over my shoulder just now and said ,"wow, they flame people so harshly on a board about Broadway. Hard to believe that kind of community would be so nasty to each other."

The fact that your 12 year old is more rational than half the posters here comes as no surprise to the other half of us.

I don't know but I'm going to have to agree that jdra's account sounds completely fabricated. But then again, what do I know?

Fabricated? Um no. I joined a few months ago. I have always enjoyed musical theater but have become more interested since my 12 (almost 13 year old) started performing with local companies in the SF Bay Area. We came to NY in April and saw a Broadway show every night for a week including Hamilton. I got my Hamilton tix at face value because when my son was in rehearsal for a show back in October, the adult actors in the show could not stop talking about the cast recording. So I purchased on Ticketmaster since I knew we were coming to NY for spring break.
