wear another show's t-shirt to the show? I'm seeing Chitty today and I wanted to wear my Chicago shirt..but my mom thought that would be rude. I didn't think so seeing as how it promotes Broadway..but I dunno, so I decided to test it with the experts.
Considering the price of tickets, wear whatever you want. I don't think this would be rude at all. There will probably be a lot of people on here to disagree. Wear the Chicago shirt and have a great time.
I'm one of those people who vacillates on this subject - sometimes I think it's fine to wear whatever the hell you feel like since you paid all that money - but then I get all creeped-out when people show up to the theatre in flipflops and cutoffs...such a white trash way of attending theatre. I say, try to look presentable, basically.
That I can do. It's not like I'm going to come in with ripped jeans or anything, it's a skirt and the Chicago shirt. Well I have to leave now so I guess this will do.
Thank you!

i think many factors dictate what you should wear...
matinee vs. evening show
weeknight vs. weekend
which show it is [for instance i feel you don't need to be as dressy for RENT, but for LA CAGE you should look fab-u-los!]
special performance, i.e. opening or closing show, last performance by major cast member, et cetera
but, yes you shouldn't wear your worst cut-offs and the like...
It's OK to wear another show's t-shirt. I'm assuming you are wearing it because you like the show and there's nothing wrong with that! Why does this response sound like something Mistress would say? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Wear the t-shirt, it isn't like there is some big Chitty vs Chicago war going on at the moment, plus those Chicago t-shirts (at least hopefully the ones I am thinking of) are pretty classy.
Anyhoo...
I love LOVE dressing up to go the the theatre, but if it is the middle of fricking summer when the pavement is in a liquid state and I am attending a matinee, then screw that! I am going in sandals and shorts!

Chicago rocks! I'd wear the shirt.
I love dressing up for theater too! I have a bad habbit of going on a shopping spree for a new outfit before every play. I bought multiple outfit components before I went to see Spamalot and spent an upwards of three hours trying to decide which I wanted to wear.
Ha ha. You spent longer figuring out what to wear than the length of the show! I figured 'Spamalot' costs about $1 a minute for the $101 seats (figuring in the on-line service charge). Even with an intermission, you're out about 10:10. As for wearing your 'Chicago' t-shirt, count me as a 'no' vote. I don't think ANY logo t-shirt is appropriate for the theatre.
Have fun at Chitty!
Wear whatever you want.

Yeah. wear the Chicago shirt. I personally always like to dress for the show though! It's fun. It makes you feel more connected. I always green to Wicked :) lol. And I agree with whoever said that the theatre should be more dressy. When I see Wicked next week, I'm going to wear a green dress shirt and a tie thats a different shade of green. AHHHH - great marketing idea for Wicked: WICKED TIES FOR MEN!
This has been discussed on countless prior threads.
I say wear casual-church clothes...guys wear khakis and a nice collared shirt, girls wear...uh I don't know
But wearing a chicago shirt WOULDN'T be rude, I mean it's not like you're trying to boycott Chitty...you bought a freaking ticket!
It's bad theater etiquette to wear a t-shirt, period.
I agree with what most people said. Wear it (I think theyd be happy to see youre supporting Bway at all) but look presentable. A skirt with the shirt should, I think, be fine.
I wore a Chicago t-shirt at Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last week and was treated horribly by the other people in the audience. They cursed at me, said rude things about my mother, threw beer at me. One guy tried to rip it off of me.
No wait... that's what happened when I wore a Red Sox t-shirt at Yankee Stadium.

How about not wearing a t-shirt to the theatre at all? Wear a skirt and a nice top. I guess at shows you should be dressed up somewhat. No shorts, no t-shirts etc.
Get a life, people!
If you want to dress up, go for it. If you want to wear a t-shirt, it's not going to ruin anyone's performance. If you want to dress up like a Taboo freak, as long as you're comfortable...
I can't believe the elitist snobbery some people are displaying- keeping theatre "posh" is directly contrary to the wishes of such down-to-earth guys as Shakespeare, Brecht, Shaw and O'Neill.
And we're talking about Chitty here- a kids' show! You'll be lucky if half the audience doesn't have ice cream smeared over their faces by the end of intermission- and that includes some of the children, too.
Enjoy it! Love it! Value it! But don't mistake it for a musieum or a tomb!

I suggest everyone honor the time and place of the birth of theatre as we know it and wear a toga.
