To all of you RENTheads out there, is it wrong that both my 3 and 4 year old daughters know practically all the words to La Vie Boheme? Just wondering.
Not really... I think it's great! I just hope you don't teach her the Voice Mail or the Tuneups... that would't be too smart. But it's cool they know it already!

Uh... well, do they know what the words in La Vie Boheme MEAN?
You know its interesting. Some parents/people would find it offensive, especially the conservatives, but seriously its something that they should be exposed to at a young age. Haha Its funny.
Not really...they love to sing it though...My 3 year old love Santa Fe also, she calls it the Whoa song...
We are a pretty open family, traditional, yet we don't "baby" things down.
I think it's wonderful....now if they were singing Springtime for Hitler, I'd be concerned! ;o)

Aww, the "woah" song. ^^ That's adorable. Anyway, I think that's cool. I was 12 when I got into Rent, and I had no idea what some of those things meant. So, I feel comparatively sheltered now. XD
Yea in fact on the way home from daycare today we listened to the obc and they asked for it over Care Bears!!
The song itself is a collection of all things Jonathan loved and believed in...I myself believe in many of the same things and want to teach my daughters the "openness" of the "RENT" world...

I think that your daughters are a bit young for that song. You are going to have to field some interesting calls from parents wanting to know where their darlings learned certain words. While I think it is better for kids to learn the facts of life earlier than later, if they don't know what the words mean yet go around singing it to their peers, nursury school teachers, etc, it may reflect poorly on you as a parent given the general social clime. Bottom line, these are words that four year olds shouldn't know. Let them live their innocent childhood while they can, they can enjoy Rent later.
Awww, I think it's really cute that your kids love La Vie Boheme. That's so adorable!
When I first listened to it, some parts confused me so I followed along with the script. What's really embarassing was that my brother had to explain the "S&M" part to me because I didn't know what it meant. (*covers face abashly*)
I guess it's a choice for each parent. I think it's great that your girls love to sing along with you (the Whoa song thing is adorable), but--for me--as great as it is to expose kids to tolerance, new ideas, etc., there are a few lyrics in the song that I would have a problem with. Even if a young child has no idea what dildos, S&M or masturbation are, I don't think those are words/concepts I'd want introduced to them just yet. (And I'd hate to have to explain to the preschool teacher why all the kids are saying "dildo" on the playground, or something.) From my own experience, I remember being REALLY freaked out when my sister explained the words to "centerfold" to me when I was 9 or so.
But honestly, there are far worse things. You're sharing your love of music and expression with them, and that's probably ultimately the most important part. They sound like wonderful kids:)

I think it's ok for them to know it. I mean i hope they don't grab a table at school hump it and say "Mucho Masturbation" but you know, if they did I would laugh.
lmao footlooser! I got into Rent when I was 13 (which isn't sayin' much 'cuz I'm 14 now) and knew what most of the words meant. I think it is funny how they sing to it, if only my friends would choose Rent over Carebears! Or...I dunno...anything, really. lol. =P
you can tell your daughters will be cursing you out and doing what they want when they are teens
are you going to tell them who to buy weed from???

People need to chill out. They like to listen to the songs, that doesn't mean that they'll be able repeat words like "dildo" in conversations. I taught 2-4 year olds for years and one of them believed while singing the alphabet song that LMNOP was one letter. Just because they listen to the songs doesn't mean that they've lost their innocence, they just like to listen to the music.
I think it is great that you are letting your kids learn that type of stuff. I have grown up in a pretty open family. I still get in trouble from time to time, but at 16, when most of my friends are getting into huge fights with their parents, I am happy and proud to say that my parents are my best friends. because I have been treated as an individual my entire life and not just some kid I feel that I have been able to gain a better understanding of why my parents punish me when they do. And because I have so much respect for my parents I obey their rules (the little they have) as much as possible. I love my parents and I'm glad I have grown up in such a wonderful environment. It also may be that my dad is a retired opera singer and my family is working to renovate an old vaudeville theater. So my family is very involved in the arts. I find that artsists are a lot less uptight. Sorry about the Rant.

abikatmom, you just keep doing what your doing.
many of the worlds problems are due to people not understanding each other....sounds like your girls are on the right path.

awww thats great and so cute!
I think some of you are looking at it too hard. THEY ARE THREE AND FOUR...who cares? The way I look at it, it's just like learning any song. I don't think it's effecting them either way..and if people think it's cute...who cares?
