Is it wrong to visit NY and only see shows?
#1Is it wrong to visit NY and only see shows?
Posted: 4/12/08 at 11:29pmI will be visiting NY for the second time in May and probably my last for a very long time, and I kind of promised myself that I would leave some spare time to do something other than theater. However, I have only allowed my first night free of theater (cause I will be jetlagged after a 19 hour flight). I am also seeing two shows on Sat, Sun and Wed. Oops. I am wondering if I should have Monday night off or see Avenue Q as I have not seen that before? Hmmmm decisions decisions...

It would be pretty hard to visit NY and only see shows. Are you going to sit your hotel room every day until 8pm?
The cool thing about NYC is that you can do any type of touristy thing (UN, Met Museum, Statue, etc) until around 5pm in most cases, and then after 5, the ONLY thing to do is Broadway. Yeah yeah there are comedy clubs and bars but none of that stuff gets going really until the broadway shows have ended anyway. So...if youre lookin for something to do in NY between 8pm and 11pm---Broadway is it.

No.
People go to Vegas just to gamble. People go to Orlando just to go the theme parks. Some people go to the beach just to sun-bathe... So it's not wrong...
I know there's tons of things to do in NYC ...but if thats what you love most..like me and most of poster here.... GO AHEAD as SEE AS MUCH SHOWS! Its your trip and your money!
Also the theaters in NYC are probably the best theaters in the World!

Posted: 4/12/08 at 11:38pmI'm a firm believer in seeing as many shows as possible. And on one show days, you can definitely sight see and bum around the city. But if you've got a chance to see a show, go for it!

You are all right.
I did do all the tourist things last May, ESB, Top of the Rock, Carriage ride in Central Park, Statue of Liberty, shopped til I dropped and saw 5 shows (should have been 6 but Xanadu preview was canceled)but I found that we were on the go the entire time.
I never really got to experience good food though because we'd be out all day and then have to rush out to dinner and then the theater. It made some of the shows lose their excitement somewhat.
I think for Avenue Q, I could probably decide on the day and still get a ticket - but I am fussy about my tickets.
Thanks everyone, you are right - I will get a ticket. After all I can give it away if I have a change of heart.

Avenue Q is a must see. But, if I were you I would see these:
GYPSY
SOUTH PACIFIC
Xanadu

There is nothing like NYC. Enjoy.
See Avenue Q on Monday and see Gypsy, Xanadu and South Pacific the other days if you can.

No more than it's wrong to live in the city and spend most of your leisure money on shows...

Avenue Q is a must see!!! I've heard that there haven't been a ton of people there so you may have a good chance winning the lotto. If not, the theatre is small and you can see from everywhere.
GO SEE IT!

The answer would be yes, if there is no show playing at the time. I visited good restaurants, checked out the sites during the day.
I think it is probably wrong to think about sleeping much when you are spending a limited time in NY. Expect flight delays. Bring stuff to read or write to pass the time.

Well, you'd be awfully bored during the day!
It's one of the greatest cities in the world. Do as much as you can.

Can you see all three?
I would not miss SOUTH PACIFIC. Xanadu and Gypsy.
PS Avenue Q is my favorite show but the other three can't be missed.

Isn't he just asking about Avenue Q because he's thinking about what, if anything, to see on Monday? Xanadu, South Pacific and Gypsy don't have Monday shows. And yes, Avenue Q is not worth seeing. Hardly a must-see now that the original cast is gone, but very good and worth seeing.

I don't have my itinerary from last year on me but I think I was there from May 19 to May 28th. The Xanadu preview was a Sunday 3pm show and it was cancelled due to computer failure. I was disappointed but knew that this happened with previews.
The next day I was walking past the theater and Jackie Hoffman was out the front on her mobile. I am a fan of hers so I went up and told her how sorry I was that yesterday's show was canceled. She offered me tickets to the next night's show but we had tickets to something else and I didn't want to risk a repeat performance of it canceling and missing out on the other show I had booked.
My partner was divastated that it was canceled (and I mean DIVA-stated). I am seeing it this time but...
