While enjoying the PBS presentation of CANDIDE the other night, it occurred to me that we are WAY overdue for a full-blown, over-the-top revival of West Side Story.
Anyone agree? Anyone hear any rumors of a production?
there has been some talk... if you do a search, you'll find some other threads regarding this... Updated On: 1/14/05 at 11:55 AM

No.
No revival unless they do an updated version. There was a cd out a while ago with famous singers doing versions of the songs. ANd that is the way they should do it.
Isn't this already set for later this year? I thought it was a go.
i agree it's time for a revival!
SOUTH PACIFIC first.
I agree with boxofficejon. It needs to be "re-imagined" a bit (a la Lincoln Center's Carousel"). I don't think I can stomach another whiny, mooning Tony. Give the guy some b*lls, for crying out loud. He was a Jet at one time.
i'm all for updating it as long as they don't bring the story to present time. i'm all for a south pacific revival too! Updated On: 1/14/05 at 01:44 PM
I would love another production of West Side Story. One of my favorites. And I agree with AndyHardy Tony needs to be more of a man, I mean he is in a gang and goes back to help and has a reputation that isnt met with most characterizations. I think a revival of South Pacific would be awesome too. I love both shows. I hope I will be able see them if they do happen.

Can anyone think of a show it's time for that's never been produced? I think it's time for new, creativity on Broadway.

It's tentatively scheduled to come back with Jerry Mitchell directing (using Jerome Robbins' original choreography) for a 50th Anniversary production in 2007.

Let's hope they cast performers who actually look like like teenagers. I'm so tired of seeing Bernardos and Anitas who look 40.

They should definitely cast young people in the lead roles. Like 18-25 year olds. It would bring such a more truthful portrayal of the characters in my opinion.
According to Mitchell's bio in the LA CAGE playbill...he already has Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on his plate...followed by him directing/choregraphing the new musical staging of Legally Blonde, which is probably going to take until near 2007 to stage.

A director can have more than one show open on Broadway in a season- just last year Joe Mantello had Assassins and Wicked.
NO!! just watch the d@mned movie!!
JUST KIDDING FOLKS
I hope there will be a revival! I have always wanted to see a live version, but with a right young cast of course!

Yes, I also agree.
We are overdue for a full-blown, big theater, SHOWBOAT style revival of SOUTH PACIFIC.
No. This is the one musical that I don't ever want to see again.
PLEASE no South Pacific. I might just fall alseep thinking about it.
A West Side Story revival would be amazing, with a little bit of updating and restaging..and REAL teenagers. It would be awesome.
Although does Equity have special rules for underage performers?
yes. yes it is. except for if they are going to do it, it better be fresh and different and take a few risks with it.
