Hey everyone. I recently had the treat of seeing a local production of IT'S A BIRD...IT'S A PLANE...IT'S SUPERMAN! for the first time after listening to the cast album for as long as I have. I loved it!
After reading the Vulture piece about it, I am fascinated by the Dallas Theatre Center production. Did anyone see it? And/or does anyone have a way I could see it, or listen to it? Is there a script out there for it? I'm beyond curious.
This aside -- I'm wondering for anyone who has seen it in recent years, how have they dealt with The Flying Lings? That's the part that really shows its age. This production I saw changed them to be Russians which I felt mostly worked.
Here’s a playlist on YouTube with some b-roll and clips of local news coverage.
I saw the DTC production. Although I knew the original only through the cast recording, it was clear that the book was completely rewritten. Not only were the Flying Lings gone and replaced with other characters, but IMO the best songs from the score - at least one of Max Mencken's solos and the song "Revenge" from the crazy professor (who was cut entirely) were also out. I went with my father, who is a Superman fanatic and saw the original Broadway production as a kid. We were both a bit disappointed with it. Some of the casting didn't really work either. It was just pretty "meh." I'm not surprised it never went anywhere.

That's a little disappointing, because in theory Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa would seem like the perfect person to rework the book of a show like that. Maybe he'd be better served working on a new show from the ground up
