I remember watching or hearing Glenn Close sing for the first time(I can't remember whether it was in a Sondheim retrospective concert) - and the song was SEND IN THE CLOWNS!
Can't wait - but 2006 ?! ( I have to plan another trip to NYC *groan...er...grin*)

Chicago Shakespeare production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was divine. You can see their Desiree in Robert Altman's THE COMPANY. She plays "Harriet."
Broadway always does things best. Can't wait!!!

Posted: 6/21/04 at 10:32pm"jo"-----youre thinking of the 1992 concert "Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall" Glenn Close sang 'Send in the Clowns' in it.

OK, I shouldn't say this but this idea worries me...
Nunn did a terrible job with MY FAIR LADY in my opinion. A dull lifeless joyless ugly production.
Then a few nights after seeing LADY and crying into my tea and scones I saw Nunn's production of Vanurgh's THE RELAPSE. He did a marvelous job.
Seriously, someone should keep that man away from musicals!

Posted: 7/31/04 at 3:15pmHaving seen the LA Opera production, with Judith Ivey and Victor Garber, I can't see Glenn Close in the role of Desiree. Judith was perfectly cast. Any word on who will play Fredrik?

I'm thrilled at the news--ALNM is one of my faves, as is Glenn Close. Her Blanche DuBois in London was one of those reveletory performances for me--just unbelievable, and I think she'll bring a lot to this show.
BUT, as much as any Sondheim show, the lyrics in this show are phenomenally (sp?) demanding. The NYCO cast didn't cut it, in my opinion. The Ravinia staging with Patti was terrific. The actors have to fly through those lyrics and belt at the same time.
I'm all over the Victor Garber and Emily Skinner proposals.

Im so excited...it's a long time to wait but I look forward to it!
BUT DEAR GOD....PLEASE let them keep Garber, Pawk, Benanti and above all
THE KUDISCH!
Ahhhh if he doesn't do it...it's not worth it!

OK, I confess to having to look up Marc Kudisch in who's who. Turns out I saw him as Carl Magnus in Ravinia--he was top notch.
Oh, and dreamy, too.

Posted: 8/9/04 at 5:04pmi agree she is ghastly choice..not only is she too old..she has no sex-appeal..not desire in carriage or demeaner..and the character is named Desiree.....i think sondheim should put a hault to this...calling betty,,,,patty...donna..even bernadette would be fantastic in this role..but glenn close..who cant sing anyway..is a pre-school choice

Posted: 8/9/04 at 5:52pmOh that is just idiotic. Bernadette Peters as Desiree..Patty LuPone as Desiree...I would never want to see either of them in that role. Love Bernadette Peters...but please...and I think what you've said about Glenn Close has gone just too far. She does tend to love to play the Brits...but she does have some sex appeal and you tell me of Glynis Johns, Juliet Stephenson, Judi Dench, Judith Ivey and Glenn Close who has the most viable singing voice....yes thats right Glenn Close.
