I've been trying to get catch a glimpse of the cast as the exit after the show, with very little success. One stagehand said that the cast "exited out the back" -- does anyone know where that is at the Schoenfeld? I'm just curious as to how adjacent theaters may or may not "interconnect" and share hallways, exit doors, etc. Thanks.

The backdoor is probably the alleyway between the Schoenfeld and the Booth. I can't remember if that passageway connects all the way down to 44th Street going back the eastern wall of the Broadhurst or not.

"I've been trying to get catch a glimpse of the cast as they exit after the show, with very little success."

If they're not interested in stagedooring, isn't this the point? Look at it this way, they have a 100% success rate!

"One stagehand said that the cast "exited out the back" -- does anyone know where that is at the Schoenfeld?"

Why do you want to harass actors who don't want to engage with the audience in this way?

Thank you, FrogsFan - very helpful and interesting to learn.

Haterobics: "Why do you want to harass actors who don't want to engage with the audience in this way?" I don't. As I said in my original post, I'm just curious to learn how theaters which are adjacent to each other interconnect, if at all. Bravo to performers who don't want to engage and find a way to beat the system!! I would be one of them, if I was an actor.

You'll improve your chances of catching a glimpse of the cast if you actually buy a ticket and go inside. And if you're lucky and there on the right night, they might even do a little show for you.

Wow, FishermanBob, you are so witty and hilarious. I HAVE seen the show. Now, you do the proper thing and reprimand me, saying something such as "they don't owe you any more than that."

Really, what is it with this message board? I know several people have left here because of the sniping. I can see why.

Probably wouldn't have said anything but loved your comment "Bravo to performers who don't want to engage and find a way to beat the system!! I would be one of them, if I was an actor." and was just trying to aspire to your level of sarcasm.

And no I wasn't going to reprimand you about how "they don't owe you any more than that." since you are already aware of that and obviously disagree. But if all you are really interested in as you claim is to "learn how theaters which are adjacent to each other interconnect", the New York City Department of Housing and Development has blueprints and floor plans on file for every building in NYC and with reasonable notice, I'm sure they'd be happy to have you stop by to take a look.

OK, but in this case, the only thing leading people to think your real intention is meeting the cast of It's Only A Play is the actual text of your post, without anyone having to twist it around or misinterpret it. If that isn't the case, I'd say you should wonder why everyone jumps to the same conclusion after reading it.

Point taken. I have been reluctant to share given the sniping I've seen here, so just a bit taken aback by the response at my first post.

I am curious about how the buildings actually connect. I have a degree in architecture and urban planning, and wonder if the close proximity of the theater buildings themselves promotes connection between the casts and crews. I know it's not always one big happy family, and it's something I hadn't thought about before my experience in front of the Schoenfeld the other night.

It is nearly impossible to predict how things will go on here. Sometimes you post something you find controversial and no one cares, and other times, something that seems boring and tame, and all hell breaks loose. It's Only a Play Stage Door ... back door?

If you want to learn about how the theaters all connect and such, leave out the bit about a cast not doing the stage door, and you wanting to catch a glimpse of them, etc. Don't link it to any show/cast.

Otherwise, it reads like one of those veiled threads where people mention that Sutton Foster doesn't come out the stage door, so where would she come out, where the real intent is to be standing at that spot with your Playbill and Sharpee.

Stagedoor threads are often huge bitchfests on here, so skip that bit and you'll learn what you want. I know if you watch the Broadway.com videos from Ramin in Les Miz and James Snyder of If/Then, they accidentally (or not) ended up on one another's video blogs as they simultaneously ran into each other in the shared spaces connecting their theaters.

Good advice and many thanks, Haterobics. I'll post more carefully in the future!

Has anyone done the stage door at It's Only A Play recently? Is the cast still exiting a back door to avoid the crowds? Are there still crowds?

I stagedoored recently on a Tuesday night and Matthew and Rupert came out. They were both very gracious and patient with the crowd. The crowd was absolutely awful-I was embarrassed to be apart of it. I only heard one other person say "nice show" or even acknowledge the Broadway show they had just seen. They were calling the actors "Ron Weasley" and "Feris Bueler" to their faces. I understand that they are both in beloved movies, but come on people, show some respect for the play you just saw! A couple weeks after I was walking to schmakarys after seeing On The Town and saw Stockard Channing come out the door, walk past the fans without acknowledging them, get right into her car, and drive away. So it's up to you whether you want to wait or not. It seems very hit or miss

I have stopped waiting at stage door when stars are in a show. The last time I did was during Nice Work and Broderick and cast were very accommodating to fans, but the amount of ebay hawkers bringing Ferris Bueller, Glory and Godzilla memorabilia to get signed was ridiculous. I was annoyed that these people were so rude and inconsiderate that I vowed I would never experience that again. Credit to Broderick that he accommodates fans, but I feel strongly that if you do not see that show, you shouldn't stage door.

If the actors do not come out of the stage door, they do not want to be seen. This can be for a variety of reasons that they do not have to let known to anyone. I think it's kinda rude to try to sneak around to "catch a glimpse" at them. They do not want you to catch a glimpse of them. They want to go home without all the fanfare. They don't owe you an appearance. It's not like they're saying, "COME AND FIND ME IF YOU WANT TO SEE ME!" They're saying, "I don't want to be seen."

Has anyone been to the stage door for It's Only A Play lately?  I am going with some friends this weekend, and one is particularly interested in trying to get some autographs.  We are going to the Saturday matinee, so I doubt Nathan Lane would be coming out, but was wondering if anyone can comment on how the stage door has been and who comes out.  Also, I believe the Jacobs has two stage doors (?), does anyone know which one the cast usually uses?  Thank you!

I saw this last Friday night, all the cast came out the SD except Katie.  She was the only one I actually wanted to meet, so was kinda bummed. Nathan didn't sign, he just went straight to his car.  The others all signed and most of them were happy to speak to the crowd, TR Knight was particularly charming and asked everyone's name so he could personalise their Playbills.  Also, Stockard was out, and Isobel Keating was on for her.  She was also very friendly at the SD and seemed pleasantly surprised by all the people waiting.
