I just spoke to a rep at RUG and she informed me that though these rumors keep running rampant (which they LOVE), there is no validity to them.
A film-version of the musical SUNSET BLVD. is not in development nor in any pre-planning stage. Not now and not in the near future. No casting nor any writing is taking place at all.
She also said that they receive numerous inquiries to confirm these film rumors several times a week from various media outlets all over the world.
Again...to quote Glenn Close (who is monitoring all this for all the obvious reasons), responded with "...don't hold your breath" when recently asked how soon could we expect the film-version of SUNSET BLVD. to be made.
Sorry.

"ALW has the release rights only."
I assume you mean "stage" rights.

If SUNSET were to be filmed (and I'm probably in the minority here by thinking if the current movie musical trend continues, it very well could) the turn around could potentially happen quickly. SWEENEY TODD was, after all, only put on an extreme fast track last year, though it had been in development with different parties for years.
To the best of my knowledge, Paramount still controls the distribution rights for any potential movie of the property, but the film itself would be produced by Really Useful Films, ALW's company.

If its official then wheres the official announcement?
I work closely with a few people at RUG here in London and as BB mentioned in his post a few posts back, its a running joke in thier offices as to where people get the info from- daydreamers we suspect! Wait for the 'official' announcement before you make up your own!

Norma Desmond is supposed to be 50 years old (circa 1951) NOT 80 years old. Gloria Swanson was 51 when she played her in the film and this is how Billy Wilder originally wrote the character.
Funny how people overlook this notion about the character as everyone seems to think Norma is 'an old lady'.

And... in 1951 a 50 year old woman -especially an actress - was considered 0-L-D!
Now in this age of "cougars," to make the Norma/Joe relationship more dramatic and unsettling.. Norma has to be tad older than Swanson was and Joe has to be a tad younger than Holden.
I say Zac Efron and Bea Arthur.
