Re-opens tomorrow night (Saturday March 12) at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood. I saw it opening night of its brief 2-week engagement last December and found the production flawed but worth seeing. Stef Tovar is proably too old for Jamie but he is a powerful singer/actor who was quite dynamic, funny, and touching in the role. Tricia Small may have had an off-night vocally when I saw her (opening night jitters?). Acting wise, she's excellent as Cathy, but she was straining for the higher notes. I'm willing to give her a second chance and am going back to see the show on Thursday the 17th because...is there a better 1-act musical??? and also because of the 1/2 price ticket offer at LaStageTix. I saw a much better production in the San Diego area also last December, but if you're a Jason Robert Brown fan and want to see The Last Five Years, I'd recommend giving this production a chance. Be sure to post your review here afterwards. Here's a link to buy tickets at $19 instead of $30--that includes the service charge) at lastagetix.com.
1/2 Price Tickets for L.A. Production of The Last Five Years
OH THANK YOU SO MUCH! i love this music but never saw the show. perfect opportunity! you are an awesome resource for LA theatre!!!
eslgr8: many many thanks. I will definitely be seeing this.

Hedwig14 and LightMyCandle125, thanks so much for the kind words. I'll post my review of this "back by overwhelming demand" production after I see it next Thursday. From the postcard I got in the mail, it seems that two of the local papers really liked both performances, though the Pasadena reviewer was a bit less enthusiastic (so they didn't quote him). Anyway, let me know how you enjoy it!
Does this mean Stef Tovar is no longer in Floyd Collins?
Hi Mallardo. Yes, I'm assuming that Stef (outstanding in last years Sunday in the Park with George) has left the cast of Floyd Collins, which I'm finally seeing on Saturday the 19th. What part did he play in FC? A supporting role?
He was/is Homer, Floyd's brother, the second lead, really. And he was terrific.
Cool, that theater is so close to me I could probably walk there. I may check it out even though I've never heard of this show.
Popular, I can see you're new here. There have been tons of postings pver the past six months on this beautiful two-person one-act musical by Jason Robert Brown. Briefly, it's the story of a 5-year relationship/marriage told from first meeting to breakup (from the man's point of view) and from breakup to first meeting (from the woman's point of view) with the two threads intersecting when they get married, right in the middle. Get the CD with Norbert Leo Butz and Sherie Rene Scott. It is exquisite!
