Joe Mantello abrasive director? Anyone have any stories?

I heard a story once that Neil Simon, when they were working together on Proposals, told him, "You take all the joy out of being in the theatre." But I'm sure there are many people who love working with him as well, don't you think?

During Wicked, Kristin Chenoweth had to wear a neckbrace. They said a lighting tree fell on her. But I've always had my doubts.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

During TAKE ME OUT he made one of his assistants go get him a cup of coffee. And he didn't even say "please"!
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

^ Well, if you had applied the cream in the first place, maybe that wouldn't be a problem. That said, most of Mantello's collaborators like his style, but wind up having more disagreements with him than it's worth hiring him for (witness the Wicked half of the new book on Schwartz, Defying Gravity).
