Joe Turner's Adding Phone Stickers?

Any given celebrity (or also any big brand IP/music catalogue akin to MJ can be a culprit of this as well) can bring in a fanbase that aren't avid theatergoers and have no sense of theater etiquette. It's a double edged sword because at the same time you're bringing new people into the fold of theatergoing, a GREAT thing, the experience can be diminished for those that are aware of and adhere to the unspoken code of conduct when in a theater.

I agree with BrodyFosse123 and Kad.

If there is an emergency, it is not the time to be on your phone. You need to be paying attention to whatever is happening and directions from theater staff. If half everyone is on their phone checking in with family or posting on social media, that could slow down the process of keeping everyone safe. Outside of an emergency like that, if you need to use your phone they have Yondr staff in the lobbies to unlock your phone for use and lock it back when you are done. I have noticed at Yondr shows that they have also had staff at the bars and Merch if you need to tap and pay with your phone.

And bottom line is, you are there to see a show, not to be texting, filming or checking social media. In most cases you have an intermission to do that. My phone gets powered off 5 to 10 minutes before curtain and a lot of times I don't turn it back on until I am leaving the theater at the end of the performance.  JMO

Joe Turner's Adding Phone Stickers?

Fordham2015 said: "This was my least favorite of the six Century Cycle entries I've seen, but B-grade August Wilson is better than most people's A game."

This right here is a measure of either how much the audience is truly distracting people, the failure of the production to cast the proper spell, or both.

This is decidedly NOT “b-grade August Wilson”. Fences and The Piano Lesson may be his shows that won him the Pulitzer, but this one is every bit as special (and like those it won the NY Drama Critics Circle Award)  It’s actually my personal favorite of all his plays. But putting personal preference aside it’s also a generally acknowledged masterwork. A shame it sounds like there are various reasons why this version isn’t landing and connecting.

Put it this way though: there’s a reason why Joe Turner’s Come and Gone is the only August Wilson play at this point to have received 3 Broadway productions.

I was there last night, and it was another cell phone nightmare.   I couldn't believe how many went off around me in Act 2.

Even after the two announcements.   It was awful.  I think the biggest problem with this uneven production was Cedric.  He's the same tone, presence, and energy all night.   The character needed more.  Sort of flattened a lot of it.

A friend just texted me at intermission and after today's matinee. She was in the center orchestra. Had to shush two people in front of her, to no avail and then someone took a phone call during the second act. I don't know why they didn't do Yondr for this.
