Lizzie:
it is the story of a not so pretty girl with an amazing voice who gives it up to some shyster and then she ends up with a troubled widower sheriff.
Ring a Bell?

I've held a *bit* of a grudge against Mr. Cullum ever since he got a Leading Actor Tony nomination for URINETOWN over the show's real lead, Hunter Foster.
I did see him in an Off-Broadway play at MTC with Rosemary Harris last year though, and he was fantastic.
Best of luck to him.

Well, it's not his fault he was nominated for it.

I just saw "110" for the first time recently. It's certainly no great work of art (far from it, actually), but Audra will make it worthwhile.

Unfortunately, I wasn't old enough to have seen it, but Cullum is absolutely brilliant on the SHENANDOAH recording, one of my favorite shows.

This is the kind of casting I like to see.
Let's hope this is the start of more color blind casting.

I was fortunate to see Cullum in Shenandoah and he was deserving of that Tony win. And I agree, the OCR is terrific.

Doesn't make sense. John Cullum is white and Audra McDonald is black. Is there a mother character in this show as well?

Any rumors as to why previously-announced Hal Holbrook isn't playing the role of H.C.?

I don't mind color blind castin just as long as they're good....unlike Brandy in Cinderella....she sucked....and can't act....and when she sings it sounds like someone is chocking a cat that smoked out 8 of it's 9 lives....

Well Audra's got 4 Tonys, so you don't have to worry.

Re the colorblind casting, it will be interesting to see who plays Noah and Jimmy Curry.
Faced with these Loreleis, what man can moralize!

Word on the street is Noah will be Black and Jimmy will be white. I say why? Can't there be a black family on broadway that doesn't deal with poverty jazz and anger. I say good for the color blind casting but for me the true test isn't would they cast white actors around a black central lead, but rather would they cast black actors around a white central lead. I've heard lots of celebration about Michael Arden and Hal and now John Cullum but the real question is if someone like Marin Mazzie were playing Lizzie, how many people would have an issue with a black father and a black brother. I personally would rather see an all black family with a speckeled cast and white leading men.

jasobres, they only mention the mother once, in "Lizzie's Comin' Home." The dad says Lizzie reminds him of her mother.
Note he does not say "their" mother. HER mother. Which they may exploit. Could get interesting.

ummmm Noah's the oldest, Lizzie's middle and Jimmy's youngest. They all can't have seperate mothers unless HC gets around. Which is odd.

Ummmm so what? If Noah and Lizzie are black and Jimmy is white, that doesn't neccessarily mean a break in continuity.
They don't have to stick to playing with that lyric. It was just a thought.
One more ummmmm just for good measure. Ummmm!

I merely responded to the thought and yes it does break the continuity. Black black aryan. THat makes sense? What gene pool is this? Jimmy isn't THAT much younger than Lizzie. 7 years at the most, maybe less. It's possible I guess but I think it complicates things a bit when Jimmy is only a half brother. I feel like these people are a family unit. They come as one. I think Lizzie helped raise jimmy after their mother died. It makes the bonds stronger for me.

They are clearly going for color BLIND casting, which means you just have to ignore race. There is no logic. You have to pretend they are all the same color. Just like you have to pretend you don't see the wires coming out of Peter Pan's back.
