One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art-Oscar Wilde

Oops! Mr. Hill criticized the vile Dr. Condoleeza Rice. He makes light of a woman named "Harriet" helping them escape the south through the "underground railroad." He employs the word "retarded." No doubt the demon censors (and maybe John Ashcroft) will be after him....

And, you, BroadwayGuy2, drew attention to it. You are a performer, my dear sir, which means that you are not entitled to any political or societal opinions.

Let's please all stick to the stereotypes America has of Broadway performers: vapid, over-paid, selfish, myopic, self-centered. You know, the kind who don't vote in the presidential elections, but just die for one opportunity to be on the Tony nominating committee.

I have performed on Broadway for the better part of the last three decades. I have every right -- as does my young friend, BroadwayGuy2 -- to express opinions about the nexus between politics and art, and put into context the artist's role in our society and our country.

Did you all miss Ms. Streisand's lecture at Harvard on that subject? Have you forgotten who won the California gubernatorial race last week? I have fought for years to strengthen the hand of Equity in contract bargaining. The political actions of our union have kept many of us alive and fed over the years. We bring millions of dollars into communities across America. So, I affirm loudly that we have a stake and a powerful voice in our national debate and I shall not be silenced.

These days, I wish I could just stand up.
