Kate Shindle was a speaker today at the Join the Impact Rally at New York City Hall.
Her speech was easily one of the most effecting of the bunch and had the crowd going nuts. Had I had my camera I would have taken video, but I'm sure there will be one posted in the next few hours. Truly outstanding, as was the outpouring today.
My only complaint was that they planned for it to take place during matinees, therefore excluding a HUGE part of the NYC LGTB community: theater people. Harvey would have been an inspired choice as a speaker after his "Where is Your Anger" piece on youtube has now become so relevant again.
I know this time was chosen so that all of the rallies were happening simultaneously across the US, but a loss nonetheless.

btw she is also anti-abortion/anti-choice iirc.
Relevance?
She was the first to admit that she could probably be considered "conservative" in her views if asked, but (paraphrasing) in this situation there IS a right and a wrong side and we're on the right side.
"btw she is also anti-abortion/anti-choice iirc."
So?
Are we suppose to exclude people on our side fighting for us simply because they may disagree with some of us on other issues?
Because that seems like a real smart plan: start adding stipulations for being for marriage equality.
If you ever voted for Bush, we don't want you!
If you live in a red state, we don't want you!
If you're a fiscal conservative, we don't want you!
That's bound to draw more people to the fight.
If it comes out alright, I should have audio of her speech. I wasn't able to get video of the speakers.
Who cares? I'm conservative on many issues too. Doesn't mean I don't wanna be able to get married.
My only complaint was that they planned for it to take place during matinees, therefore excluding a HUGE part of the NYC LGTB community: theater people.
I'm not sure if the idea for the nationwide protest actually started in NYC. It could well be that the time was already set before the NYC one was organized as the goal was to have people across the country rallying at the same time. Yes an earlier or later time would have been better for theatre people, but to not exclude them IF the NYC group was the impetus behind the whole thing, it would have had to be the wee hours in California ~ which is the matchpoint for this whole thing ultimately.
I'll post a link to my facebook album if you're interested.

Great pics and thoughts you guys!
Shindle sure looks revolutionary in her camo hat and trenchcoat.
We will truley have a United States when we agree to disagree on certain topics and agree on others.
No movement is either black or white.
Great pics Jaystar, tell the guy who likes his pot, I'd marry him anywhere (if I weren't kinda taken).
Keep up the Good Fight!!!!
I didn't see any signs saying this, but on cafe press there's a shirt I want that says "I want what the chickens got!" LOVE it!!
"btw she is also anti-abortion/anti-choice iirc."
If so, then that makes her a particularly good spokesperson for gay marriage.
nobodyhome ~ Exactly. She perfectly demonstrates that you can be conservative on some issues and not on others. Logan paraphrased beautifully how she started her speech. She understands this is clearly an issue with a right and wrong side, and those fighting for equality are fully on the RIGHT side of this.
I wish I could have been at the MA rally, but sadly I was working
. Great pics, jaystarr - my favorite is the one with the sign that says "Look at Mass: Legalize Gay Marriage, Win World Series." Not sure that would work for the SF Giants, but it certainly wouldn't hurt either :o).

I can see thtrbear's point, though it's not something I would get up in arms about. Some people may view Kate's support of one kind of choice but not another as a little inconsistent. I don't think this can be boiled down to simply a matter of choice. However, it is a little inconsistent to care about one area of gender issues (LGBT rights) but not another (women's rights). But hey, all I care about is that she delivered a moving speech that's grabbing attention. Kudos to her.
There was a stage?
I was so far back that I didn't realize there was a stage til i saw the pictues here.
Yeah...it wasn't really hig, but there was one there.
theminutepast ~ While in a way I agree with you, I think (though I don't presume to speak for her) the abortion issue is probably more of a religious one while the marriage equality issue is a civil rights one, and Kate is able to tell the difference and separate the two. (Has she actually been vocal about the abortion issue or is that her personal belief...I don't know, there seems to be a difference for me.) It's definitely complicated, but at least on this issue she does seem to be able to separate church and state.
For those who liked what she had to say today I would like to point you to the direction of Kate Shindle's blog:

it's not *all* politics, but it is all fascinating reading. (And she's already updated about today, giving a shout-out to 'some guy' who put her speech up on MySpace :))
