Anybody going to this in a few weeks? I keep going back and forth on snagging a seat.

I won’t be able to attend and Bobby Darin’s life story doesn’t excite me but I’d give my right arm to see Groff Sauce in anything. Get that ticket then let us all know how it was.

I'll be there at the Sunday night performance - honestly I have no idea what to expect, and Bobby Darin is an interesting choice. But I too am stoked to see Jonathan Groff perform and will see anything Alex Timbers is attached to. I'm pretty excited to see what they all do.

if you get a chance go see this both for groff and the great songs and story
bobby darin was incredible and the last of the great crooners in the sinatra tradition
We have a full show production of the life of Bobby Darin playing now in Melbourne[not seen] starring David Campbell, a very popular and versatile performer[son of Jimmy Barnes-google-another hard to believe story].
A big band orchestra on stage and all those wonderful songs.
It's a very interesting story, married to Sandra Dee, his Mother was his Grandmother and his sister was his Mother, and he died young.
Would love to perve on Groff as he sang all those amazing songs.

OoOo, thanks for putting this on my radar! Grabbed a ticket for Sunday.

Just want you to know, SL, that
some of us on these faraway
shores know exactly who David
Campbell is. We have an
entire shelf devoted to his CDs,
including SWING 1 and 2,
which cover much of Darin's
material.
I'd go see either Campbell
or Groff as Bobby Darin, but
didn't Kevin Spacey just do
that?

Not sure if he has repeated the role recently, but Spacey starred in the movie Beyond the Sea back in 2004.

Went to see a VERY young David Campbell many years ago in Melbourne, long before he went to NY, at a night club and he was singing Sinatra. He got quite bad press saying 'who does this young kid think he is trying to be a crooner' [years before Buble]. I saw him much later doing a master class with Barbara Cook--sang something like 'up a lazy river'---Ms Cooks' response---'there's nothing I can teach you'. It pleases me that he is back doing more theatre and hopefully has left his[brief] rock days behind.

SweetLips and GavestonPS are confused about his event. Hope this helps them.

No confusion at all---just commenting about Bobby Darin and a show celebrating his life and music--but thanks for the read.

I do hope he's shirtless in this show....

Thanks for the clarification.
At my age, 14 years go by
in the blink of an eye.
Which means I probably
only have one blink left.

What the hell are you talking about?
We were just discussing modern
performers playing Bobby Darin,
which per your link, is what
Groff has been hired to do.

Unfortunately, it’s not that unusual to see Kevin Spacey’s name, “age”, and “14 years” in the same sentence or paragraph these days.
Six months ago “Kevin Spacey plays Daddy Warbucks” would have sounded like brilliant casting. Now it sounds like a dirty joke: “I told you to bring me a boy! Go back and switch her.”

I'm curious what their take on this will be as the 92Y concerts tend to be ensemble shows. I know next to nothing about Bobby Darin but I'm subscribed and I would have seen a Jonathan Groff concert regardless.
Bobby Darin deserves a homage. He is not only an underrated singer but an underrated actor as well. He held his own in “Pressure Point” opposite Sidney Poitier.
He loved Connie Francis but wound up with Sandra Dee.
The guy is a legend.

I keep getting Bobby Darren confused with Bobby Driscoll and I think Driscoll's story would make a fascinating musical.

reports on this would be greatly appreciated! I am considering snagging a ticket for tomorrow afternoon
A friends'[an 80yo female] report on the Melbourne production of Dream Lover-----'It was sensational---a real Hollywood musical. David Campbell, WOW- a super voice, excellent casting. The music, costumes, dancers and staging all first class. All on stage were fabulous. A full house and a total standing ovation'.
Now I can't wait for it to come to Brisbane.

Yes buy. At intermission now. Loving it. More thoughts after the show.

Thoughts after show:
I didn't have any previous exposure to Bobby Darin, so I actually read his Wikipedia page first. I really enjoyed the storytelling overlaying the musical selections. The performances were pretty spectacular in the capable hands of the very talented cast and band, which of course, largely features Jonathan Groff. I'm in the camp where I'll listen to anything Groff and he delivers. Extremely charismatic.
The first act is exciting and up tempo. Time flies as you listen to the story of his humble beginnings, ambition, and rising fame.
The second act gets pretty somber, and as a result feels sleepier.
It was quite fun to hear the audience whispers of recognition when certain songs came on. As I was leaving I heard various comments that this was "one of the better ones" and that other shows have been "amateurish" in comparison. Good to know.
Tldr; really enjoyed it. If you're a Jonathan Groff fan it's a no-brainer.
