What a stupid idea.
It's a lock to win Best Revival of a Play.
They should at least wait until the NEXT weekend to see if business increases at all.
It's really a shame...this is SUCH a brilliant production.

Posted: 5/17/07 at 12:44amYeah, that is weird, maybe if they see an increase in profit they'll just keep it open, but I doubt it would really see that much of a change.

I do think that their marketing is AWFUL.
But people who aren't buying tickets to this are just plain stupid.

Posted: 5/17/07 at 12:56amThe marketing is awful. This is one of the few shows (the only show?) this season to receive across-the-board raves, and yet it has been playing to less than 50% capacity for its entire run. You never see ads for it anywhere: in the paper, on the subway, on TV. Something is wrong there.

Are they even marketing? They should def. play up Hugh Dancy, since he is dating a pretty well known actress.
And its playing to less than 30% for most of its run. Sad.

Hugh Dancy is dating a well known actress, so they should promote the fact that he's in the show?
Well, that makes no sense.
Not only is the marketing awful, but their logo is awful. It's wooden, cold, uninviting, and looks like something that was drawn up 50 years ago. It's just not appealing. It should be something more sleek, something more along the lines of the logos and lettering for THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, THE RETREAT FROM MOSCOW, etc.

In the end, people just didn't want to see a play about war unless it had star names in the cast. There was too much competition from other plays this season.
I don't think that a change in marketing would have substantially changed their fortunes. It's a crying shame because everyone I know is urging people to see this. With capacities this low, however, there wasn't enough people to spread the word of mouth that this play needed.
It's a crying shame. It was one of the most powerful theatre experiences I have ever had.

Promoting Hugh Dancy off who he's dating is ludicrous. The guy was nominated for an Emmy for a critically acclaimed miniseries (Elizabeth I), he was in enough movies that would drive in a certain audience (mostly teenagers) - their marketing was horrible, no matter how you look at it. Sure, it might not have always been a hit, but even to get a nightly 50-60% capacity of people curious of the show based on reviews and buzz would have been better than today, and totally plausible if you ask me. It was a sitting duck. And I sort of hate that I'm already referring to it like it's already closed.

Bobby - huh? Star names in the cast? What are Hugh Dancy, Boyd Gaines and Jefferson Mays? Chopped liver?
I loved the play - and consider this to be a pre-eminent cast. If by star names you mean stunt casting, it would have spoiled the impact of having such a beautiful ensemble piece of work.

I agree about the advertising. The blue background with the black letters was ugly and boring and gave nothing. The picture of the guys wasn't very good either.
I've been thinking about this play all day - it just won't get out of my head. I bet everyone I know is already sick of hearing about it.

Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:07pmI really wish I could have taken my spring trip to NYC. This was one of the top 3 on my list. I really wanted to see John Behlmann. He is graduated from the NTC here in Denver last year.

Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:15pmWell, i just meant that, Hugh Dancy is starting to become a more recognizable name because of who he is dating and his name is in People magazine and stuff. I didn't mean play up the fact that he's dating someone famous, but play up his name.
#15re: Journey's End to Close Tony Sunday
Posted: 5/17/07 at 1:26pmClaire Danes is "famous" but I don't think she is famous enough to really get him noticed. He seems to be doing that on his own.

Posted: 5/17/07 at 2:53pmI'm surprised. It's been hanging on barely for this long, I thought they would at least wait for the Tonys.

They should have a poster of the boys shirtless.
They looked great at EASTER BONNET.

We didn't go since my wife isn't interested in plays about war - unless it's a musical (Les Mis, for example)!
