Judi Dench "A Little Night Music" Cast Recording..?

I've recently read the Royal National Theatre's A Little Night Music with Judi Dench is one of the hardest cast recordings to find. Is this true?
I'm seeing it go for some very high prices online. For those who own it, is it worth getting? And is it really THAT rare?

I have a copy....how much are they asking for it?
Mine was a gift, but I can't imagine it's worth over $25--if it's that much or less, go for it, otherwise, you'll be disappointed I think.

I have it, and am eternally thankfull for it. It's the only recording I listen to. I don't know that it's worth what people are charging for it, but it's definitely worth having...if that makes sense.

It's out of print and extremely rare. The company that recorded it went out of business, so currently it can't be printed. That's why copies go for upwards of $100 on eBay.
I burned mine onto a blank CD and sold mine of eBay for $95.

My favourite Night Music recording - yes, even over the original. It has so much more character. However, it was the first (and only production) I saw live, so I may be biased...

"I burned mine onto a blank CD and sold mine of eBay for $95."
Ditto.
Even though the company that recorded it is out of business, you know that the masters are lying in a vault somewhere. Someone should get them and reissue this cd. With Judi Dench's movie and tv popularity, it could be marketed to more mainstream audiences. I may call the local PBS station here. They could make big bucks off this.

Posted: 1/30/07 at 11:24amI've always wondered why the mixture of the movie and stage versions of Glamorous Life used on this recording isn't available for licensing. It's brilliant.

Posted: 1/30/07 at 11:28amIt was reported at the time that Sondheim didn't want other productions to adapt the score in the same that the RNT did, which is another reason why we may not see a re-issue of this CD anytime soon...

By the way, I wonder who will control Sondheim's estate when he goes to meet that Great Composer in the Sky? Hopefully they won't tie up his work and deprive audiences of seeing it in the future.

The Judi Dench ALNM was recorded on a label called TRING and when they folded the discs vanished.
A handful turned up at www.berkshirerecordoutlet.com about 7 years ago and these were instantly snapped up (at $5.99 each) and probably are the copies being bought, sold and and traded on E-bay now.
It is very good...though not thw perfect polished jewel that Columbia's original Broadwy cast disc is. I'd rank it a close second...miles ahead of the 1st London cast (RCA) or the Jay/TER studio cast. The movie soundtrack is not on CD, but aside from some interesting lyric changes (and the addition of lyrics to the opening Night Waltz) it isn't really worthwhile.
Careful about paying high prices for any CD because there is ALWAYS a chance that it will be reissued.
Since the CD was never released in North America, perhaps DRG could obtain the rights to release it.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Posted: 1/30/07 at 1:43pmI think this CD is higly overrated and I am thankful, after hearing it, that I didn't fork out hundreds of dollars over for something that can never beging to touch the glorious, wonderful, remastered OBC.

Posted: 1/30/07 at 2:57pm$100 is obscene for a CD. Glad I got mine for $10 at a garage sale.

You can hear her singing "Send In the Clowns" on the "Hey! Mr. Producer The Musical World of Cameron Mackintosh" cd if you're willing to have only one song in your hands

I SAW this production and it was HANDS DOWN the BEST theater experience I have EVER had. The theater was reupholstered in the color they used on stage - it was like sitting in a lavender cloud... the stage revolved on a layer cake like cylinder, creating rooms, outdoors, etc. The orchestra was mounted on the wall next to the proscenium arch. Judi Dench was amazing - as was the ENTIRE cast.
SOO grateful I saw it...
