Variety reported that Ian McKellen was to play Deuteronomy. 

I've also read that Jennifer Hudson is Grizabella, and that James Cordon and Taylor Swift are cast in as yet unannounced roles... (?)

Swift is supposed to be one of Macavity's girls based on director Tom Hoopper's suggestion. 

I've never liked Cats. If it eventually shows up in iTunes as a $0.99 rental, I might see it... but I doubt it.

Saw Dame Judi in "Tea With the Dames" this afternoon. I thought it was better than Cats.

I don't.

Acting in spite of song makes the singing feel misplaced and forced and that ruins the acting performance, the notes get in the way of the acting and that makes the acting feel insincere.

Acting through song is a different story, but you need people who can sing for that.

This has less to do with casting a woman in a role traditionally played by a man just to cast a woman and more to do with casting Judi Freakin' Dench.

I must admit I am interested, it looks highly doubtful that there actors will be playing cats like on stage, maybe it will be some sort of 'let me read a story to my kid' and it gets played out kind of thing. If it isn't something totally out of left field then I just dont know what the point of it all will be.
