Somewhat OT, but does anyone know if LuPone has signed to extended past Jusly 8th? I know this isn't the topic of the thread, but I didn't feel like starting another thread.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

According to Telecharge:
Patti LuPone is currently contracted through July 2, 2006. At this time, it is not known if she will renew her contract beyond this date.

this confuses me. the rumor that she would take over the role seemed more reasonable. but for kaye to take over for a week? that surprises me.

To answer an earlier question, Kaye first played the role in 1984 at Michigan Opera Theatre, with David Cryer as Sweeney, then in 1992 at Paper Mill with George Hearn, and then in 2000 in two fully-staged concert performances in London with Len Cariou.
Her Lovett, at least at Paper Mill and in London, was streetwise, tough as nails, and superbly sung, with a powerful, chesty lower register and a beautiful use of head voice in her upper register. It will be interesting to see what she's like in this production.

On the compilation CD "The Musicality of Sondheim", Kaye does a bone-chillingly precise rendition of "Wait". I have no doubt that she'll be phenomenal in this production.
I have tickets for June 21 (some friends coming into town and this is the only show they wanted to see), so I'll be seeing Judy in all her glory. So excited!

As a producer, wouldn't you want a Tony-winning actress filling in for your vacationing Tony-winning actress? Meaning no offense to standby Dorothy Stanley, who is one of the most talented women working today. Having Kaye fill in for Lupone means that there might be less of a drop-off in sales during Lupone's weeks away.
To be truthful, the long run of this SWEEENEY I'm sure comes as a happy surprise to everyone involved.
