I am so saddened by this news. She was a wonderful actress. I feel so fortunate to have seen her on the stage.

Posted: 3/28/10 at 6:46pmI saw her in the 2nd tour of SWEENEY TODD. She would have been 68 then, and giving a performance of someone a good 25 years younger.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

Posted: 3/29/10 at 11:38amShe also wrote a damned good play, MARATHON '33, about her experience as a marathon dancer. The Actor's Studio produced it in the early 1960's with Julie Harris (who was in her late 30's)playing the 16 year old June.

Coincidence/Karmic energy/Fate:
Yesterday was the day I cast a production of "Gypsy" I'm directing this summer. Dainty June ended up being the most problematic role to cast, with drop-outs/availability issues coming into play.
I actually heard this news from the actress who called to accept the role...She was doing a little research beforehand, and decided to take it "in memoriam" (said jokingly, of course).
This is the first large-scale production I'm helming...something tells me we'll have a little help along the way. And a real good time, yessir.
RIP June...Hope to do you proud (despite all the legitimate qualms you did have with the show)!

Posted: 3/30/10 at 11:24amBecause June Havoc had issues with the libretto of GYPSY during tryouts out of town, GYPSY was billed as "A Musical Fable" in Philadelphia; co-producer David Merrick reasoned, as a lawyer, that if the show was seen to be a made up fable, then Havoc could not sue. In the Philadelphia Playbill, it was Baby Claire, not Baby June. Finally, Havoc was placated and from then on the advertising and lobby card read: GYPSY, a new musical, and it was Baby June in New York, not Baby Claire.
