I've noticed a trend of lazy slogans for Broadway shows recently. It's as though the marketing folks can't come up with anything better than, "Hey, you! Get out your credit card NOW and buy some tickets to our show! 'Why!?' Well, BECAUSE!!"
Some recent examples:
This slogan looks like it could have been written by wIcKeDguRL69:

This one we've seen for some time now. The Musical About Love? Why don't you dumb it down a little bit more?
Not that I'm saying slogans should be complicated. They should of course be simple and to the point. But I thought we had more creative minds out there today who could make slogans more show-specific, giving ticket buyers a reason for why they should go see that particular show.
The slogans above just seem a bit desperate to me.

My particular favorite (and most creative) is:
XANADU
on Broadway.
The critics LOVED it!
Seriously.
Yeah...that whole "The Musical About Love" thing with The Color Purple has always confused me. There are other musicals that are more about love than I'd say TCP is. It's not like they cornered the market on it.
GOOD VIBRATIONS
"It's like GREASE on surfboards!"
Wasn't "The Best Musical. Ever" used for the original ACL run? I swear I saw that in a picture of the marquee at the Shubert, or somewhere.
Unfortunately, while "The musical about love" may not be the most creative of slogans, it does allude to a theme of the show "What about Love" that gets repeated. So it does actually make sense.
I think they should've said: "A story about love, _____, and _____."
That ACL slogan makes me laugh everytime I see it.
The whole "The Musical About Love" thing always bugged me because I totally felt like it was short for "yes, yes- you may have heard- two women kiss, but don't worry, this isn't about 'teh ghey,' it's The Musical About Love."
And I *love* The Color Purple, but "The Musical About Love" has just always bugged...
Oh- the Xanadu one is brilliant, though, because I remember the first time I saw the posters as I was walking by and I went "Xanadu- seriously?" and then finished reading the poster, where it said "seriously," and that did make me giggle...it was hella more entertaining than quoting Perez Hilton in the marquee, that's for sure- talk about desperate.
the slogan for ACL .. "The Best Musical. Ever." was used during the original run of ACL after it broke the record and became the longest running show in Broadway history. The slogan was not created for this production.
Thanks for the info. That was my mistake.
I don't know if "The Musical about Incest and Child Rape!" would've boosted Color Purple's box office grosses quite as much...
"the slogan for ACL .. "The Best Musical. Ever." was used during the original run of ACL after it broke the record and became the longest running show in Broadway history. The slogan was not created for this production."
Just because it was the longest running musical then, it sure as hell doesn't make it "The best musical. ever." Is Phantom the best musical? Nawwww

Come to our show or we'll come to your house.
Wasn't there one for Ave. Q? Something like "We won the tony"
"Purple is the best Color in town."
I actually like that one.
wicked, I think that's still on the marquee.

Thank you.
"Just because it was the longest running musical then, it sure as hell doesn't make it "The best musical. ever." Is Phantom the best musical? Nawwww "
Geez, why the animosity? The slogan was created to celebrate its (then) status of being the longest running champion. And it was very appropos at the time. Not going by this current revival, but the original production of ACL was far better than anything currently or recently on Broadway.
And in case you haven't noticed, Phantom isn't using that phrase.
I was making a point that just because it became the longest running musical in Broadway history, that doesn't make it the best. That slogan really wouldn't make me want to see it.
wicked, I believe this is what you're talking about.
I actually really like it- it's pretty funny.
I don't remember seeing this slogan until Fantasia joined the cast...but I could be wrong. Actually, what bothers me more is Fantasia's hair in this picture. I do think she's talented and fits the part, but every time I see the poster around town, I say to myself "Whyyyy does your hair have to look so awful?!"
Yeah, they could've at least put her in costume.
Xanadu quotes Perez Hilton on the marquee?

Spamalot claims to be the "Funniest Musical On Earth"
I think not.

Yes, Fanadu.
"Find your Xanadu." [Which I actually like.]
