Just saw The Frogs

The first act was fun. The second act was arduous-it needs at least 20 minutes of cuts/rewrites. Shakespeare vs. Bernard Shaw in a boxing ring with Ibsen thrown in? Heady stuff for a musical. And Chris Kattan can't act or sing (and barely tries to do either)--zero stage presence. Where's Matthew Broderick when you need him. However, Nathan Lane holds 2/3 of it together by his on-stage talents.
Bonus... Nathan sings a Sondheim song to his dead wife which sounds suspiciously like Sweeny Todd's 'Johanna.'
This concludes tonites Theater Review from midtowngym.

re: Just saw The Frogs

Stephen Sondheim wrote THE FROGS, right? Ok, I can cross that off my to-see list.

re: Just saw The Frogs

J., did you get my message about PASSION the other day?

re: Just saw The Frogs

So J, you don't like Stephen Sondheim, you definately don't like Marlon Brando, because you said his passing was "No Great Loss" so...who do you like?

re: Just saw The Frogs

Nope. I'm not ignorant. I honestly have list of shows to see and some have priority over others based on how likely I am to enjoy them and that was my point. I like Kevin Spacey, Tom Hanks, and Julia Roberts most.

re: Just saw The Frogs

Well J, with that list it doesn't look like you'll be going to the theater anytime soon.

re: Just saw The Frogs

Umm, actually Im going to see Bombay Dreams in 3 days.

re: Just saw The Frogs

You would probably want to avoid those until your brain has had a chance to heal.

re: Just saw The Frogs

actually, a little transatlantic hop would let you see Spacey on stage quite a lot, given his new leadership of the Vic. And J at least watch the movie of STREETCAR before dismissing Brando's career. Then you'll know what you think is unimportant, at least.

And extra butter will do.

re: Just saw The Frogs

Yeah, I;ve heard mixed reviews about BOMBAY DREAMS but I know someone in it and I need to go. I do not really like Stephen Sondheim. I usually go to musicals when I want to see midless fluff and I go to straight pays when I want to see somthing thought provoking. Intellectuall musicals dont seem to work for me for some reason. I have trouble with non-melodic "talking" singing. By the way, Kevin Spacey gave a great performance in THE ICEMAN COMETH.

re: Just saw The Frogs

You guys get too excited too fast. There's no cat fight, sorry. I didn't even think last night was one. The Marlon Brando thing was an accident. I have only seen THE GODFATHER.

re: Just saw The Frogs

Please! No fighting on my thread. Where's the love? It's not Mr. Sondheim's fault he's repeating himself. He is almost 75 years old--maybe he thinks he wrote 'East Side Story' 50 years ago! These things happen at a certain age--he's not a god, but merely mortal (isn't he?)

re: Just saw The Frogs

J, maybe you will benefit from listening to Sondheim's scores before seeing one of his shows. I found that the more you listen to his work, the more you like it. Or at least, in my case this is true. So maybe you just need to let it grow on you. If you keep avoiding Sondheim shows, you're depriving yourself of some great theatre and great music.
