Some people have stated that Olivo had an "acceptable" reason for missing all those shows.
What exactly is that excuse?
Has there been an offical statement?
And for the record, Anita is a challenging role, but not an incredibly difficult one physically.

Has there been an offical statement?
does it really matter?
given that everyone is saying the exact same thing they were saying in the last thread of this nature (where, in turn, people were just repeating what they had already said in the thread prior to that), it seems like you've already made up your mind on the matter.

"wasn't Ethel Merman's name about the same size as Gypsy on the marquee, too? "
Yes, Lansbury's name was also disproportionately too large compared to the size of the show title. It was a bit hard to make Bernadette Peters' name the same size, since it's so long, but it was obviously very very prominent. I still think Gypsy is a prime example of a show that is selling the performer and the show.

I'm sorry, Winston, but it is you who are incorrect. I think it's really best to avoid making sweeping generalizations such as "people are going to see Gypsy for Patti and for no other reason," because there are inevitably going to be examples which refute them. As in this instance, you yourself! :)
Moreover, the show was revived so quickly because Laurents wanted to "correct" the Mendes version, not because people were clamoring to see Patti Lupone in it. Because in the end, not that many people cared to see the show with her, even after she had won the Tony award.
