Posted: 8/16/09 at 11:22pmWhy do I feel that it is only a matter of time before someone chimes in that it was wrong of her to be out, she is being unprofessional and so forth?

Posted: 8/16/09 at 11:39pmwell i herd she went clubbin wit her boyfriend instead of performing, dats unproffesional

Posted: 8/16/09 at 11:43pmShe was in for both the Saturday evening performance and today's Sunday afternoon performance (as noted by adamgreer). If she did eight performances this week though, I'd be shocked.

...only if she were missing the first performance following her Tony win.

I am glad she is back and healthy.
How was her performance?? Did her voice sound strained?

Posted: 8/16/09 at 11:45pmShe was out last Saturday night and I was told she was on vacation. I think a lot of the audience didn't realize it was an understudy though because she got such a huge cheer during the curtain call.

She was apparently on a scheduled vacation August 3-10.
By the way, rumors of Yanira Marin's departure seem premature (I know she's off the website). She performed this afternoon.

I think her absences are extremly unprofessional. Im only seeing the show on saturday because of her yet as a fan and someone buying a ticket I shouldnt have to worry weather or not one of the stars is going to be absent the day I go.
I held off buying a ticket because I kept hearing of her absences but finally I did anyway. But for fans of hers this is a big turn off which I think results in (some) people not buying tickets..It sure held me of for this long

You should have to worry, no matter what show you go to. The chance of a performer being out is common and you have to go in knowing that you may not see the person you like. It is the risk you take. I love Karen and in my opinion, her performance is not be missed...but, the ticket says WEST SIDE STORY not KAREN OLIVO.

Posted: 8/17/09 at 12:15amsaveusmike, I have said it before and I will say it again. Buying a ticket to a show does not promise you that a given performer is going to be in. Regardless of their fanbase or how popular they are in the theatre community or even if they are above the title. All buying a a ticket does promise is that you're going to see the show on the ticket in the theatre the ticket says and you're going to be sitting where it says at the time and date on the ticket. Everything else is just extra.

She was better than ever this afternoon. Her act 2 was extremely powerful. She proved to me all over again why she truly deserved the Tony.
I've seen her 4 out of 4 times in the show, so I guess I'm lucky.

CS I completly understand and agree with what you are saying!
But when I saw shows like blithe spirit and god of carnage etc I worried that cast might not be there but I feel with Karen the chance is even bigger. One day when I actually considered lotto until I saw the understudy slip on the floor for karen which sealed all my fears after hearing from what all of BWW was saying lol.
But as someone on this forum said if your buying tickets to "Patti Lupone in Gypsy" you wanna see Patti Lupone in Gypsy

How peculiar. WSS doesn't use understudy slips.

But that is kind of different. Patti's name is in the title. PATTI LUPONE GYPSY.
Not even "Patti Lupone in Gypsy"
It was a much bigger deal since her name is printed on the ticket.

Posted: 8/17/09 at 12:23am^ Actually, her name wasn't on the tickets (or at least, not on mine)
#18re: Karen Olivo's Attendance
Posted: 8/17/09 at 12:25amPatti Lupone's name was not on the tickets for Gypsy. I don't understand why people call it Patti Lupone Gypsy. Her name wasn't on the playbill cover either. It's no different then "Richard Griffiths Daniel Radclffe Equus" or "Jeff Daniels Hope Davis James Gandolfini Marcia Gay Harden God of Carnage."

No, LuPone's name was not on the ticket. It was however, printed bigger on the marquee then the title of the name itself.
The difference between Olivo in West Side and Patti in Gypsy is that people are going to see Gypsy for Patti and no other reason. That is why she was above the title. Whereas, the main draw of West Side Story is that it is a classic musical, that people know and love, and hasn't been on Broadway for thirty years. The draw there is not Karen so that is a poor example.

Yes Winston your right.
But what I mean is im sure Karen has a big auidence that some just see the show for her ( I know I am one ). Its a shame for people who buy tickets in hopes of seeing Karen Olivo and then they are dissapointed in finding out she is not present.
#21re: Karen Olivo's Attendance
Posted: 8/17/09 at 12:33amPeople say PATTI LUPONE GYSPY because LuPone's name was the same size as the title of the show on the marquee.
#22re: Karen Olivo's Attendance
Posted: 8/17/09 at 12:34amHer name was not printed bigger on the marquee either. The title of the show just had double lights and her name had single lights. There's just more letters in her name then in the title of the show. And I know plenty of people who can't stand Patti LuPone and went to see it for Laura Benanti.

Slightly off topic, but there was a letter to the editor in TIMEOUT NEW YORK last week asking if someone could get their money back if the Maria was out. They had heard Josephina was the reason to see this revival and she was out. TIMEOUT said the policy at the Palace is if Maria esta ausente you get your money back.
Anyone tried?

I don't think you can. Well I've heard for this specific revival that you can't get refunds if performers are out.
