Julia Murney's song (I wasn't there, but I know the piece well) is called "It's Amazing the Things That Float" from THE FLOOD, by Peter Mills. It's from the second act, when the character Susan returns to her flooded home to find everything washed away. (But she's happy to have a fresh start... the show is based on a real Illinois town that was washed away in the 1993 Mississippi River floods.)
Wow, i'm so glad I went to this concert ,eve nthough I am officially broke. It was increadible! I've never had an especially huge fondness for Liza's voice, but, she's Liza and she's a legend. Glad I saw her.
I'm not afraid to admit, I CRIED when Idina sang ICY. It was so surreally amazing!! Other highlights for me were Julia Murney, Movin' Out, RENT, Shoshanna, and Spelling Bee's interpretive dance! SOOOO friggin funny! It was such a long evening, but very surreal .I keep using that word but it's the only thing to describe how I feel! I need to look at my progra mand see if there was anything else I wanted to comment on.
By the way, it was good to see you WickedRentQ and WesternSky!
I don't know if Shoshana was so much coming out of her dress as much as she forgot to wear one in the first place. Her top looked like it was incredibly see-through -- I don't know if it was the strong lights or it was something originally made as underwear. It certainly didn't look like something you would buy to wear outside your bedroom.
The performances overall were incredibly strong – there were about 25 performances, and the only so-so performances by soloists to me were Susan Lucci (she did the best she could, but there is no way she can compare to the rest of the talent up there -- she was brave to even try), Patrick Wilson (he is usually great, but was kind of cracking and seemed off somehow to me), and the Elizabeth Parkinson-Keith Roberts "Shameless" duet (in "Movin' Out" this was awesome, but seemed tentative and unsure at the benefit). The "Mamma Mia" cast really seemed to be enthusiastic and enjoying themselves, but then I remembered that they spend every night needing to show that they are bright and enthusiastic and having fun singing Abba songs, so who knows what they really think? In any event, I really enjoyed their performance. The legends showed us why they are legends. Of the performers I had never heard before, Brian D'Arcy James and Adriane Lenox impressed me a lot -- loved the "unplugged" Adriane and almost wished the microphone was never turned on.
No-shows on the program or the poster: Christina Applegate, Altar Boyz (although it sounds like at least some of them were there), Charlotte D’Amboise, Raul Esparza, Brooke Shields, Terrence Mann.
I agree with the comment earlier about song selection not being ideal. I don't think that individual song selection was a problem as much as the cumulative song selection. As might be anticipated considering the theme, so many of the songs were mostly unfamiliar ballads of the introspective, wistful type or the "inspirational" type that they seemed to blur together. But it was great to hear so many wonderful performers all on one bill.

Oh, Em and Westernsky knew how I felt about Liza and Maybe This Time. See the Cabaret Soundtrack was my first influence to musical theatre, my aunt played it for me everyday as she drove me to nursery school and it was the first musical thing I obsessed over...I startd hyperventilating when I thought Liza would sing Maybe This Time and then frowned but still enjoyed it. Still the two bars of Cabaret at the beginning...ah...definitely was hyperventilating, amazing!
Everythingisrent, once again I didn't realize who you were, you didn't tell me! Once again, i didn't have the oppertunity to break into the Space Cases theme song...
Holly, great to meet you too!
Some of my favs were Liza's two bars of Cabaret and other song which I thought was Maybe This Time, Ben Vereen doing Corner in the Sky, Shuler doing You'll Never Walk Alone(song has big meaning in my life, was bawling), Idina doing I'll Cover You, Bernadette doing No One Is Alone(was hoping it'd be something from Into The Woods), Adrienne's unplugged version(I agree I was also mad they brought back a mike), Megan's alto's lament was hysterical, Spelling Bee was of course great, the broadway inspirational voices and well more I can't think of.
But AMAZING concert. Very, very moving.
"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli
I think if any of us knew the name of the song that Patrick Wilson sang, we would have told you by now -- it was one of the "unfamiliar ballads of the introspective wistful type." It might have been called "But Not for Me," but I have never heard the song before. I don't remember much else about it or any of the other lyrics. (There was no program with song titles listed.)
ETA: I was also incredibly excited that it sounded like Liza was going to sing "Maybe This Time," one of my favorite songs of all time, and also confused/frowning when it wasn't. I think that the vamp must have been from Maybe This Time and she just sang something else, because otherwise someone needs to be sued for plagiarism.

Haha I DID say who I was, but it was RIGHT when the lights were going down, so that's where the confusion happened LOL sorry about that! I'll be sure to introduce myself properly next time YAY Space Cases!
Haha aww sorry, I def jumped and turned around. When I came back last night, and saw your seat number, I thought about it, and realized that was you and got upset. We'll def find each other again!

"People were taking pictures like little photo fiends. Someone had to announce a no flash photography reminder like four times."
And the person behind me had the most annoying whirring camera...if they took any photos during Idina I'll kill them, lol. I can't remember, I was too spellbound to notice anything else...she was AMAZING!
Megan Hilty was second for me - I adore the girl, and she was hilarious. And such a treat to see Bebe Neuwirth perform as well :)

Hmm, you mean "But Not For Me," by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin - a classic. Actually, yes - Patrick Wilson sang "But Not For Me." (So many youngsters on this board.) This is a beautiful song but hard to pull off - lots of half steps, minor key. Patrick almost did it, but not quite. It probably wasn't the best choice for this benefit. Still he looked fabulous!
There were many serious moments and so much talent. I'll mention the comic highlights: Bill Irwin (he is a genius - he radiates humanity in his comedy), Megan Hilty (pure showbiz laughs, and nice voice too) and the Spelling Bee cast for confronting the "elephant" in the room with great humor.
Stupid question about Megan Hilty's song, "The Alto's Lament." Is Megan actually an alto? I haven't seen her in Wicked, but Kristin definitely sang some extreme high notes and I thought that Glinda was a soprano role (I am not a singer and I apologize if I'm totally off.)

a lil insight on the Altar Boyz appearance at the benefit....a bunch of us attended their 7pm show last night and the guys did head out to the benefit shortly after their show let out. They told us they were only scheduled and asked to appear in the new york, new york finale number...no performance on their own.
