A rather strange report that perhaps will be unfounded like the early announcement that Scarlet Johansen would be playing Maria in THE SOUND OF MUSIC in London.
Still, I know Knightley was on the "wish list" for MARY POPPINS on Broadway, and auditioned for the film of PHANTOM (though some people say she is rumoured to have been tone deaf).
Perhaps she's been studying, or perhaps she is eager to recreate every facet of Audrey Hepburn's performance (i.e. using a voice double) but I think she'd be a lovely, spirited choice. She was a delight in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.

It would be nice to have some further explanation than "NO" - and please make it something other than - "Its not fair when the role should go to Jan Smith, who is the swing in the non Equity tour of MILLIE."
We live in an age where it takes real star power to make properties happen - both on Broadway and in film. If she has the chops and the interest to carry a musical - I say more power to her.

Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:09amWell, in case this is for real, Mr. Macintosh will consider the risks and if he does cast her for Eliza then he'll have reasons for it. His productions up to now were usually successful.

If she's tone deaf the solution would be: cast her as Higgins, she can fake it like Rex Harrison

And lets be real - her singing couldn't be any weaker than Martine McCutcheon who won an Olivier award for the role in London.
I don't know if she's actually tone deaf. That's what somebody reported here when her name was mentioned for MARY POPPINS.For all I know, she sings like Renee Fleming (or maybe Yma Sumac?

Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:21amI just can't get on the Kiera train. Every time she opens her mouth to speak, I have to plug my ears. THere's something smug about her that doesn't sit well with me.

Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:22amI thinks she's one of those people... I love her, my best friend can't stand her.

Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:23amI say let's wait and see. She isn't even cast yet! But, Michael, she WAS a delight in Pride and Prejudice. I adore that movie! I think she can act very well.

Actually Martine McCutcheon was good in that role! I went to the opening night and I loved her.
I somehow do not see Keira doing this! Why do they need to have Hollywood actors? There are so many talented theatre actors out there who need work!

Eliza should be a bit annoying, but not totally or the audience will stop caring about her future.
I'm not even a My Fair Lady fan, so I can easily stay clear of this.

Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:30amI think Martine McCutcheon has a good voice (if not right for Eliza). If Keira can really sing, maybe it would be ok, but she's pretty average as an actress as it is so she'd have to be pretty stunning to sell me.

Posted: 4/11/06 at 11:30amMaybe Marni Nixon can dub her singing.

I read an interview (can't remember where) where Keira herself described herself as an awful singer.
Doesn't mean she won't get cast though. And it doesn't mean she won't do a good job. Studio mixing can do wonders.

Yeah, because they want Eliza to sing like an 80 year old woman!
