If Alec Baldwin hadn't commited to a TV series, he would have been perfect in the role!
I dont think his casting alone will lead to the closing, but it is a step in the general direction. Both Pryce and Norbert and Tony winning actors and are both recieving rave reviews for their respective performances, which does in fact count for a good deal of attendance. The show needs some good stunt casting of more household names to make up for losing those performances. Some obscure Carradine brother doesnt really work...

Hmm... I don't think this is a good choice. He's a very sleazy looking guy, not necessarily the sophistication or class guru that both Pryce and Lithgow could pull off.
If this is definite, then, Norbie's replacement has to be AMAZING for the show to keep going.
Norb's replacement is Brian D'arcy James.

Oh. I see. Well, in that case, bye bye, DRS! You will be missed.
Please guys Come on. This does NOT mean the show is closing. It just meand different people in the roles. The show is doing quite well. By the time the new people are in it, it will have been running almost 2 years. It will be fine.
Like Daphne Rubin-Vega as Fantine in the LES MIZ revival, there is a reason why they were cast I suppose.
No one goes to re-cast a role to shut a show down. Many shows have gone on LONG after the OBCs were all out of the show. THE PRODUCERS is the best example.
Chins up. The show will go on
Any show can close at any time.
No one's doubting the quality of the performer's really, it's just without any hype or names, DRS's already less than stellar numbers may very well be impacted.
We can all keep our chins up until the cows come home, but that in no way guarantees DRS will last much longer, although I wouldn't sign its death warrant yet, it's not beyond the realm of possibility, it certainly didn't win as near as many Tonys as producers, nor did it remain as steadily sold out for so long, so comparisons to that show are weak.
Also, it is many months away from being open 2 years, as it opened March 2005..
Norb's replacement is Brian D'arcy James.
What!?! When was that announced? I can't see him in the role right of the bat. Has such an amazing voice, would be very curious to see what he does with the role if this is true.
It was confirmed by Mr. Brian d'arcy James himself, and others, although yet to be officially announced.

My favourite all time scene in any movie ever is when Keith Carradine sings "I'm Easy" in Robert Altman's Nashville. Throughout the movie he has slept with various women (played by Shelley Duvall, Christina Raines & Geraldine Chaplin) but elusive one - the one he can't get - is played by Lily Tomlin. She agrees to meet him in this seedy bar where he is coaxed to sing on stage. He mentions he wrote this new song for someone special who might just be there tonight (Lily Tomlin). The other three women are also in attendance thinking he wrote it for them (closeups show each of them blushing). Then he starts to sing...the camera work is amazing. By the second verse each woman realizes he is singing to someone in the back and not to them so they look trying to see who that is. Amazing scene. Rent the movie. He well deserved that Oscar as that song is integral to the movie and beautifully written.
this is going to be interesting. I would like to see him in the role, but like others said, he's not that big of a name.
I think Brian will be great though.

"Some obscure Carradine brother doesnt really work"
Uh, hello. Just because you don't know his work does not make him "obscure". People were actually born and doing things before you were old enough to remember them. I guess if David Merrick went with your line of thinking, "Hello, Dolly!" would not have survived Carol Channing's departure when other "obscure" actresses replaced them. Trust me. People in the world know who Keith Carradine is. He is more well known than the current stars of DRS in the real world.
Yeah, this will really pack 'em in.....

Well, if the show is any good, it will last. If it is not a good show and depends on John Lithgow, Mr. Pryce or Norbert Leo Butz, then it will close. Somehow "La Cage Aux Folles" managed to run for years without any "names" after the departure of Gene Barry and George Hearn. Walter Charles and Steve Aarlen, not exactly household names, kept it going for years.

Geeze.
Well...okay...no matter what happens, you know the show will run out the summer, when attendance is the highest. If it has decent summer numbers, it may hold on until the winter. It's really making me sad to think about, but it probably won't make it past 2006. I'll at least keep my fingers crossed that it makes it that far, until the end of the year...it's possible.
sleazy? Come on! And he is not some "obscure Carradine brother". If anything, he's probably best known of any of them!
Someone else already said this, but I'll repeat it as well...there's life outside the broadway chat boards!
Ya know, guys, there is NO REASON to get so upset. No closing notice has been posted, Sherie will be back and it'll go a least nine more months, maybe more. It'll finish out the end of the year and beyond. The show is fun, unique and has a great score. Word of mouth is good and the numbers are pretty steady and good... except for last week when most shows- even the big ones- were down.
And I'm sorry for being optimistic and being off a few months, BluCat500. I did say ALMOST 2 years, and any show can close at any time, I know that. Just trying to be excited for one of my all time favorite shows
Just remember "NOTHING IS TO WONDERFUL TO BE TRUE"
Im sorry but some best known as the half-brother of the guy from Kung Fu is pretty obscure. Jonathan Pryce is a globally known and highly respected actor, lets not get crazy with the comparisons here people.
I remember the feeling I had when I heard Pryce was replacing Lithgow. I loved JP but just couldn't imagine him carrying this role. Man was I ever WONDERFULLY surprised! I've learned and I'm giving Keith the benefit of the doubt.
He truly is not "best known" as the half brother of David Carradine. Most will probably remember him as the guy in Pretty Baby, or the guy from the Madonna video. Most have seen at least ONE of the many TV movies he has done.
Some have been lucky enough to see him on stage in things like Tobacco Road, or Will Rogers Follies, or Hair.
So your telling me that people are going to go see her because they know him from the Madonna video?! Are you kidding me! If that was the case, Threepenny Opera should sold out everynight, they have Madonna's baby daddy!
oh hell no! I'm not saying anything about show attendance, DRS chances at staying open, his acting abilities, etc.
I'm only saying he's not this "obscure" actor that no one has ever heard of.

Some of these kids think that because they have never heard of someone that no one else knows who they are either. News flash: There were actually theatre, film, tv and broadway stars before Idina Menzel.
Something isn't clicking here. The announcement posted here says that Carradine will be playing his first performance with Norbert. If you check Broadway.com (the only other place I could find it) they also cited the NY Daily News (a truly fine publication) and they said Carradine's first performance would be July 18. The producers of DRS have already announced that Norbert's last performance will be 7/16. So what gives?
I checked the NY Daily News web site and couldn't find anything. Playbill.com hasn't picked it up yet.
edit: I found the Daily News reference. It's one line in the gossip column, from "a reliable source". It's probably true but I do think there's more to this story than we've heard so far.
