Hope it's OK to post this here - figured since Kelli is currently on Broadway and her co-star, Renee Fleming, was recently, it would qualify. PBS is showing this tonight at 9. I'm looking forward to it, I heard it was a lot of fun.
Of course, "check your local listings." And sorry for the last-minute post; I just noticed it in the listings.
I can't find it listed in the San Diego area. It's not showing up on my guide under Merry Widow or Great Performances.

^I'm also in San Diego and it isn't showing up for me either.
I'm sorry. PBS can be so frustrating. I'm in upstate NY.
It is a Great Performances broadcast. Hopefully it will run in your area at another time.
LOL more like RENEE FLEMING and the side character kelli ohara. Isn't Renee fabulous??? She sounds amazing!!! I <3 her
To San Diego posters:
The Time-Warner listings here in Palm Springs show it at 9 p.m. on LOS ANGELES' PBS, Channel 8. I know TW gives us public broadcasting from several SoCal cities, so I'm mentioning this in case your cable company does as well.
Watching Kelli in The Merry Widow makes me think she would make a wonderful Baker's wife in Into The Woods.
Reviews for this were mixed at best. Opera aficionados seemed offended by a Broadway person, Susan Stroman, taking over the Met to do a mere operetta, and a translated one at that. They were very unkind to Renee Fleming, with some saying that she was miscast and others saying more bluntly that her voice was shot.
But as usual Kelli O'Hara received good reviews by almost all. The Times:
Ms. O’Hara’s ardent fans (put me in the front ranks of that group) will be delighted with the chance to hear her sing without the amplification requisite on Broadway. She is a vocalist with operatic training. And her tender voice carries nicely in the house — certainly as well as that of the gifted young tenor Alek Shrader, who sounded a little pinched as Camille in his scenes with her.
If you haven't seen it already this clip of Kelly with the Grisettes shows the most Broadwayish number. It shows her boisterous side: Entering tipsy and joining the kick line with women almost half her age.

We saw the HD theatre broadcast - which will be in theatres again on July 22 - but hey, if you can watch it for free on television.
In any event, I thought The Merry Widow was okay. It was definitely more "Broadway" than "grand opera". Lots of dialog. Stroman only seemed to let loose in the third act. Even the very partisan crowd I saw it with (Nathan Gunn lives in town) were only partially satisfied. It wasn't that anything was particularly wrong with the opera - it just didn't have any major highs for me. Not necessarily her fault, but Ms. O'Hara's character was particularly flat. Ms. Fleming seemed to have more fun. Nathan Gunn seemed bored. The best bits were by the non-singer Carson Elrod.
It's on at 8 tomorrow in San Francisco. I'm excited to watch it!
