was that a joke? Sweeney Todd has murders and the grinding of dead bodies into pies, and RENT has the "f" word. I wouldn't take young kids to either of those.....

Millie, Little Shop, Hairspray, Mamma Mia!, 42nd Street and Aida would probably all be good for kids.
Definitely not Rent. There's a lot in Rent that is pretty inappropriate for kids that age. It's likely that most of it would go over their heads, but even if that were the case, it would be better to wait until they are old enough to understand it. They'll get much more out of it that way.

Sweeney and Rent are COMPLETELY inappropriate.
My 9 year old sister saw Little Shop and loved it. She thought it was hysterical, and was thrilled by the plant. I would take them to see that---42nd Street and Millie and Hairspray are all great themes as well.
Aida isn't visually interesting? The lighting is the best I've seen for any show---brilliantly lit. The color changes and sharp designs are absolutely stunning.

Thanks -- I hadn't thought of Little Shop. Is it doing well? Think it will still be around by October?
Also, I've heard that a Camelot revival is coming. That might be good too. Anyone know any specifics?
I'm sure I'll be aiming for Chitty in 2005, but first I need 2004.

Not so sure about Wkd . The Flying Monkees are a bit grotesque esp when they fly over the sudience might be a bit much 4 the 8yr old. Depends on the Maturity level.

Millie, Wonderful Town,2nd street are all appropriate enough for kids. Millie's the best out of those 3. (to the person that was concerned about the Asian sterotypes in the movie of Millie: the musicals completely different. The Chinese men are good guys. It's also not as bizarre as the movie.) Wicked is AWESOME but probably not for really really little kids.

Millie (my personal favorite), 42nd Street, and Wonderful Town are all great shows to introduce kids to big song and dance musicals.
Wicked is definetly awesome, much like Phantom, but not much dancing.
Hairspray is also a great all around show, but I think teenagers would especially appreciate it.
Blue Man Group is also a lot of fun, and being in a small, downtown theatre, a different experience from the standard Broadway musical.

So here it is another year later, and now I'm looking for a good show for 10 and 12 year old kids.
Any suggestions? So far I've taken them to Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Fiddler on the Roof, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
I know "Tarzan" would seem like a logical choice, but I'm hoping to avoid that one.

MAYBE, and I mean it by MAYBE, SWEET CHARITY. I haven't seen it yet, but am seeing it on December 9th. I heard it has some risque stuff in it, like some nightclub scenes where women dance innappropiately in front of men, and Charity is not really the best role model, or clean-cut.
Hairspray and Wicked, definitely.
Don't take them to see the following shows:

The Light in the Piazza (It's very clean, other than two uses of the word, "crap", but it would bore them too death.)

Ages 10 and 12? I have to agree with others and go with Wicked or Hairspray on this one. I think they are age appropriate, but (equally important) also enjoyable shows for the grownups.

You do realize that TARZAN doesn't start previews until the end of March, right? When are you planning on going?
PAJAMA GAME Previews at the end of January and is harmless enough for kids.
SPAMALOT AND WICKED are fine if you can get tickets (not easy for either show).
They'd love HAIRSPRAY.
THE PRODUCERS has a couple of curse words, but is otherwise fine.
THE COLOR PURPLE might be too mature for some kids -- depends on your parental philosophy (my parents certainly would have taken me at 10). It does frankly deal with the relationship of Shug and Celie and there are a few kisses between them at the end of the first act, but otherwise it's a pretty powerful and uplifting story that I think children would appreciate (I saw several kids at the show when I went). The film version was rated PG-13 and this isn't any more "adult-themed" than that.

Just know, and you may already know this, that there is definitley sexual innuendo in Hairspray. I think its easy to forget, and it might not bother you at all-but I thought you should know that there is definitley sex-type stuff in Hairspray.
But its really a good show for kids otherwise.
