Kid-friendly Shows

Hi,

I've gotten into the habit of taking the kids to a Bway show every fall, a few weeks after school starts.

So far we've done Beauty & Beast, Lion King, and Phantom. The kids really enjoyed all 3.

Any recommendations for Fall 2004? The kids are now 8 and 10.

hmmm.... mabye Thoroughly Modern Millie. There are some very exciting dance numbers ect. Sorry that I don't have more!! I just thought, since no one else is responding, I should at least venture a try!!

Yea I was thinking Millie or Hairspray it's a very fun up beat shows that has a history educational kind of shoreline going for it lol. Or Wicked if they have seen the movie the wizard of oz the'll get the jokes and its really a wonderful show.

Not for fall 2004, but Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is flying to the Ford Center in April 2005 (previews starting in March).

Yeah- and 2006 could be Tarzan!!

42nd Street might be fun.


Wicked might also be fun for them- my little brother is 9 (right between those two ages) and he hates musicals (so unlike me!) and I took him to see it with me, and he loved it!
I have my books and my poetry to protect me...

I'm concerned about Millie.

I've seen the movie (never seen the show) and I think the evil Asian stereotypes are really inappropriate for kids.

Is the show better than the movie in this regard?

Im asian, and wasnt offended at all by the sterotypes in the musical. they were more ligh-hearted in the musical nd funny. I think your kids would enjoy it!

I'm 18 and I'm being forced to see Fiddler I don't think it's a show Kids would enjoy. I have always found it boring.

Millie, Wicked and 42nd St are safe bets. 8 and 10 can probably handle Hairspray and Little Shop as well, but that's a judgement call. When I did Little Shop, we had lots of kids in the audience and they loved it. Aida is visually pretty, but the story might bore them a little. It's not as upbeat and fun as the previously mentioned. I doubt they would like Fiddler or Gypsy.

I didnt think Aida was visually interesting at all, I thought it was all about the singing. Amazing singing, but if youre hoping for an oooooooh factor to keep a kids attention with sets and stuff, Aida didnt do it for me. Id take em to Hairspray or Little Shop. >Getting ready to see little shop right now<

You didn't think AIDA was visually interesting? I guess Cheyenne wasn't on as Radames.

I am voting Hairspray too. All the colour, fun and happy music, plus an interesting sorry not hard to follow, will surely thrill them !

Oh, it was Deborah Cox, Will Chase and Jessica Hendy... who all had AMAZING voices, but no I didnt like the sets at all. Aside from the opening museum scene, everything else was more or less a backdrop and a bare stage. Even the swimming pool, while clever, was just 'eh.'

Maybe BestofBroadway can be the class mother for a Hairspray outing!! HAHA

I think WICKED and 42ND STREET are great choices.

I would not recommend HAIRSPRAY, because of the racial themes in the show that little kids might not understand. I agree that the story of AIDA might bore them as well. As for LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, that also seems a bit "scary" for an eight year old.

In the Aida making the broadway musical book it said they went with the "less is more" aspect. I thought it worked well with the show. Though i don't think aida is a show for an 8 nd 10 year old..as people said before.....it can bore them.

right now I think WICKED is probably the best bet FOR KIDS. Every kid has seen or knows about The Wizard of Oz and from what I've seen of the sets, makeup and special effects they are enough to keep anyone interested. It just might be a little hard to get tickets, but if you plan in advance there should be no problem.

Look into Wicked and Little Shop.
Little Shop might be scary for the 8 year old.
Go look into the New Victory theater. It is for children and the kids will love it.
They have a different show all the time.
PS Check and see when the Paper Bag Players perform. It was my first show and it turned me on to theater at three.

In fact the more I think about it, if I had kids, WICKED is the only show I would take them to. Everything else seems to have a question mark by it. But, then again if they've seen Phantom then I guess most other shows would seem somewhat tame. (Except for RENT because the "f" word is used every ten minutes...) But, I say WICKED all the way. Now if only CATS were still on Broadway.... those were the days...

I know they did it purposely and all, I just think it couldve been better. Like the jail scene, couldve had more going on set wise. And the AIDA logo, as great as it is, was used as a backdrop just a little too much for my tastes.

WICKED, LITTLE SHOP, HAIRSPRAY, 42nd STREET.

I'd say your best bet with an 8 year old is HAIRSPRAY, then WICKED. HAIRSPRAY is more upbeat and fun, while WICKED is familar characters, great dance numbers, and wicked good songs.
