The King David soundtrack is available for download at Menken's site.

Thanks! I ber that'll stop it from going for $150 on eBay (grin).
Darn, I knew I should've sold it earlier.

is anyone having trouble opening it? i seem to be. i downloaded it and tried to open it on itunes and i cant.
Once you unzip the files just go into itunes and use the "Add Folder to Library" command under the File button.
Works just fine for me and absolutely love this show! The Death of Saul has a great big belt note. goosebumps. in fact so much of it is uber powerful.
If only the score was available.....

ok i can get the 2nd half downloaded and got it on itunes fine. but the first half is not even opening in WinZip. Anyone having trouble the first half?
I've managed to save both halves fine and from there have opened the files in iTunes where they initially work...but after a song has first been opened and played, iTunes says it cannot locate the file when I go back to play again.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? Is it because of the compressed zip format of the files? Is there a specific location that I need to save the folder?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with this show's score, why did it never come to Broadway?
If you were familiar with it, you'd know why.

it was a limited enagagement Broadway-style oratorio. it would be really cool to have it as a full out bway musical...the music is fabulous! i heart Alan Menken!

um...i finally got the whole thing downloaded and it is soooooooo awesome!!!! It's so "Disney-esque!" I was familiar with a couple of the tunes before, but now that I've heard the whole cd, I am in love with this show! "Sheer Perfection" is such a beautiful song!!! And this recording is sooo rare and it's like $150 on Amazon!! It's so amazing! Everyone needs to download this!
I'm sorry, but two or three good tunes does not a great score make. The constant recitative is interminable and abhorrent. As much as I love Tim Rice... the lyrics just aren't all they should be. I think Menken had the right idea, in general, but the score as represented on the disc does not measure up for me. He seems to have written a through-composed score and a highlights cd is bound to seem incomplete and undercooked. I'd definently purchase the entire cd if that is ever released (the commercially availible cd is only highlights of a much more complete score, which was recorded in its entirety). Sadly, for fans of the show, I feel the highlights cd is the beginning and end of KING DAVID. Fot better or worse. What a cast, though!

I'm confused by the post above. I know that the entire score is basically sung through (because it's an oratorio), and you call it interminable. But you'd sooner buy a recording with all the recitative rather than the highlights version released? I don't understand.
I love this score, and it is literally my favorite theatrical score, if I HAD to pick one (which I hate doing, but if I HAD to). I don't feel there are two or three good songs. I truly love every track on the CD. The cast is remarkable, the orchestra sounds fantastic, and the score is just one gorgeous (or thrilling or rocking or solemn) moment after another. I seem to be one of the few people who bought the CD when it came out, and I downloaded the recording from this website because I had literally worn my copy out.
As for Tim Rice's lyrics, I think they're generally wonderful on this project. A few clunky lines here and there, but for the most part great, with a few standouts. "The Long, Long Day" may have the most beautiful lyrics I've ever heard, and I seriously want them read at my funeral.
I'm not crazy. I just really love this show, and it makes me sad that people disagree, but that's just personal opinion, which no one should ever apologize for. It especially makes me sad when people just flippantly dismiss the entire thing, like "If you knew [the score], you'd know why [it didn't stay on Broadway]."
Hey, for me it wasn't the score, it was being in the New Amsterdam on the first night of its rebirth.
Sorry, does that come off as bragging?

i agree, i think there's more than just a few good songs in this score! i pretty much love every song! i discovered this musical last year when I was doing a project on Alan Menken for my Musical Theatre Literature class. I have been interested since and I am soooo glad to find a recording online. And it's indeed a very underrated, unknown musical that should be known. It's so different and cool!
Let me clarify:
I would purchase the complete recording to find out if the recitative is developed in themes that were left off of the recording. I have heard from many people the many of the most beautiful passages were left off the recording. I'm not against giving it another try... I much prefer complete scores and I feel I would enjoy a complete recording much more than the highlights recording which feels very disjointed to me. The score is not without its merits, I just don't feel it fulfills its potential judging from the highlights recording.

I just heard "Never Again" performed at a recital last night, and then I read this thread. Wow. How fortuitous!
Does anyone have the zip file that I could receive from them? The website doesn't appear to be letting me download the files anymore...

haha it seems like everyone seems to be hoping the same thing here. I'm really desperate too, I heard some clips on Amazon and it sounds amazing.
