Is King and I going to last. Not doing so well in the b/office!

The King and I is still doing fine at the box office. They've seen a dip, but they're still making plenty of money each week.

Namo, did you rewatch MRS. DOUBTFIRE recently?

Your posts remind me of the Robin Williams' line about "drive-by fruitings"!

And I mean that in the best possible way.

Is student rush available most weekdays now?

I second that! How has student rush been lately?

There has been a lot of rush availability especially Tues, Wed, Thurs nights. Matinees are full with seniors and the weekends are fairly full.

Despite many less than full performances, their average ticket price is still among the highest on Broadway. LCT has developed an inscrutable system of premium tickets. There are two levels, $250 and $395, and the designated premium seats seem to differ for every performance of the week.

For at least some performances, rows three through ten of all three center orchestra sections are designated as premium. It looks like they sell enough premium seats to subsidize discounts on the undesirable rear left and right orchestra seats. I'm sure someone has a much better understanding of this than me.

Show was putting up solid 100 percent for week after week until around when Watanabe left. Coincidence? I'll be going for the second time tomorrow with the prejudice that the new King is too young and I won't enjoy it as much as the first time. I'll see what I think afterwards.

Remember they are a subscriber house. I would assume that Watanabe's departure lined up with the subscription period, which would of course have an effect on that drop that they saw at that time. They went from houses filled with both subscribers and general ticket sales to houses that relied solely on general ticket sales.

I don't think it's going to have the longevity of their other musicals. It's also a HUGE cast. So, I'm sure it's an expensive show to run.

That sounds like a good explanation.

So I saw Jose Llana today as the king. I didn't think that he had the charismatic command of the stage that international film star Wanatabe had, but he didn't seem too young to me and I think that he detracted little, if at all from the performance. In fact I was surprised that I, having already seen this production once, and having seen the 1995-96 Donna Murphy revival, and having watched the film several times, got so teary-eyed at the conclusion.

Oscar Hammerstein II had elements of genius. He should have theaters named after him. He should have statues. He took many of the deepest moral questions of the time: slavery, misogyny, racism, sexism, "cultural imperialism," and engaged the minds and the emotions of his audiences with them. At the same time he injected great comedic touches and put it all against a background of songs that pass cherished from one generation to the next.

And of course he also gave us Stephen Sondheim.

I don't know how much the gross matters since it is a non profit theatre that receives grants and donations. And so much money was put into it. If it were a terrible production the run might be cut short but I think it will have a healthy run.
