Posted: 8/31/09 at 10:49amThe role of Billy has never been performed better. It certainly has never been danced better, although the talented David comes oh, so close. Well done, Kiril, for all your hard work, your devotion to the show, and of course for sharing your multitude of talents with Bdwy audiences for the past year. You made your mark on the show, as well as on Bdwy and Tony history. Fly high, Kiril! Bravo!

This is what I think of the 4 boys' Billys.
David - angry, bitter, lots of issues
Kiril - lonely, vulnerable, trying to find a place in the world
Trent - plucky, cocky, the survivor
Tommy - playful, mischievous
As to how to rank them, I would kind of like to take:
Kiril - for his dancing (but David is oh, so close)
David - for his acting
Trent - for his singing
Tommy - for his exuberant onstage personality
Overall...Kiril...the closest to my perfect Billy
Also, wouldn't the storyline work if Billy's age was, say, 14? I don't think you lose anything, although I think the scene at the cubicle with Debbie would have to go. I never liked that scene much anyway. It only worked with Tommy, in my opinion. Isn't it just as possible that a 14 year old boy would have conversations with his dead mother, or only an 11 year old?

"Also, wouldn't the storyline work if Billy's age was, say, 14?"
No. Conservatories prefer students who have been developing their technique from a young age. At age 14 Billy would be deemed too old to learn any useful technique (by their standards). He would be too old to be able to unlearn old techniques that aren't proper. Perhaps if you remove his admission to the Royal Ballet from the plot it would work.

Is is bad that I chuckle a little bit, whenever a Billy boy losses its wings?

Posted: 8/31/09 at 8:52pmOne of the Billy's I saw in London I believe was 14, if not he was 13. Colin Bates. From the audience he looked exactly like Jamie Bell, and was terrific in the role. It worked fine with a slightly older Billy.

It's not about their ACTUAL age, but their on stage look.
Additionally, the music has to be altered as their voices mature and they can no long hit the higher notes. (That damn puberty!)

I'm with Yankees 1253 about the voices. The best and most moving Electricity I have heard is soung very low by Nick Twiney in Australia. You can find it on YouTube. It was his final performance, and you can tell he is almost crying in a couple of places, unless this is the way he always performed the song. His voice had dropped too low to continue in the role and is rough at times, but the effect is overwhelming. The electrifying audience reaction is included in the audio/video on YouTube. Liam Mower sings prettily, but I'll take Nick and the passion of Kiril and David any day.

Posted: 9/23/09 at 7:37amI was fortunate to see Kiril's performance last night. He has definitely grown and his voice is getting a bit deeper, but he is AMAZING! His passion during Electricity is so moving---and I believe his dancing has improved also! I hope his career grows as he does.

Posted: 9/23/09 at 10:01amI also saw Kiril again last week. The role of Billy has seldom been performed as well, and has NEVER been danced better. Kiril will be sadly missed on Bdwy. Yes, his voice is lower. The music has been dropped and he sings the final notes of Electricity down a third, but yes, so very very moving. I must admit I teared up a bit when Billy said to Grandma "Can't I stay?" and Grandma replied "No, Billy, you have to go." Those who have seen any of the original Bdwy Billys have witnessed 3 rare and special performances. Such a shame there will be no permanent record. Well, thankfully the boys do have their Tonys!
