re: Kiss Me Kate

I own this DVD. Other than Barrett, York - both of whom were excellent - Nicholas Colicos, Teddy Kempner, Jack Chissick, I don't care for the cast. I found Kaye Brown, who plays Hattie, to be an awful singer. I also didn't care for Nancy Anderson. She wasn't sexy, her dancing was stiff, and her singing voice grated. Once again, I'm just judging from the taped performances.

I think Anderson gave an AMAZING performance. I enjoyed Amy Spanger in WS a lot, but thought she was uninventive and boring as Lois. I absolutely love Nancy Anderson, and thought KMK wass no exception to her amazingness. Agreed, the Hattie in that production was AWFUL vocally.

Don't get me wrong. I liked Anderson in Wonderful Town and Fanny Hill, but I didn't like the choices she made for Lois. Like I said, first and foremost, she wasn't sexy. What kind of guy would go for a chucklehead like that?

And, by the way, I disagree about Spanger. I thought she played it with the right mix of daffiness and sex appeal. She made the character somewhat dumb, but without being annoying.

re: Kiss Me Kate

I am not familiar with Kaye Brown's other work but could just be the range in the song. It did sound horrible. Although we should note that the OBC doesnt have anyone belting an F either re: Kiss Me Kate

I will agree that Nacny Anderson was not going for sexy at all. She did the entire run if I remember. And totally agree about Nicholas Colicos.

Fantastic performer! Even better as Franz in The Producers. When this production toured the UK it folded midway. Some miscast leads and a very unenergetic ensemble really dragged it down. Either that or the UK provinces prefered the horrible amateur version I had endured before seeing this!

re: Kiss Me Kate

The only thing I found disappointing with this DVD is that the Hattie doesn't belt out AOAS like others have. She does a good job, but the songs just isn't as exciting as it should be.

re: Kiss Me Kate

The girl that sings "Another Opening..." is pretty bad indeed, Nancy was sexy in the old fashion way, she is sexy in the pin up girl way, of course that nowadays means "not sexy" but i think she was sexy enough. Although im a big fan of Nancy, she was not using her real voice to sing the songs in KMK, I was surprised to hear her soprano voice in Fanny Hill. But Nancy's dancing was outstanding i thought. Michael Berresse is a great dancer as well as the rest of the cast. Kathleen Marshall did a great job with the choreography.

Thought the show was ok, but the cast was WOW to me.... well, but I had no other casts to compare with.

You've said this about three times and you're wrong. How is it not her real voice? Is she lip-synching? NO.

If she chose to alter her voice to suit the character then she modified the sound of her real voice in order to achieve her own interpretation of Lois Lane/Bianca.

Is JLY not using his "real" voice in JERSEY BOYS because he sings in falsetto? No. He has a character to play and that's how that character is supposed to sound. Would Angela Lansbury not be considered using her real voice in the revival of GYPSY because she didn't use her accent? No.

So, no matter how you slice it, Nancy Anderson IS using her real voice. She's just chosen to use a certain register. Which, to me, makes her a fine actress that she can achieve such versatility. If she doesn't use her soprano, it doesn't mean she's not using her real voice. You can't fault someone for not using something when it's not needed.

re: Kiss Me Kate

Foa is correct. Nancy made a choice for her character. Her choice was valid. It shows a versatility in a singing voice that is not always seen these days. That said, I seem to recall Nancy using a similar voice in WT.

As for BSM, does anyone remember the 'So In Love' reprise? I have a feeling that BSM sang this while sitting with his back against the 'corridor scene' flat. But, then again, I could have imagined it. Anyone else see the Broadway revival? Can you recall this scene? Brent Barrett's version is slightly different, I think.

Umm...yea.

Don't think I overreacted there.

Was simply making a statement.

I never said that her choices weren't valid. I said I didn't like them.

re: Kiss Me Kate

Well, what i meant is that Nancy "chose to alter her voice to suit the character" thanks for the correction.
