Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

Hey,
I was just looking for some info on this cast recording, how people felt, etc..... I usually don't like to buy cast recording if I haven't seen the show..well thats not true, sometimes I feel that i can't fully get immersed if I haven't seen the show. Anyhow, I'm a huge fan..so i was just wondering whether it was worth the buy.

Do you mean "Spiderwoman?" LOL!!!! If so, it is a great cast recording. I kind of prefer the New Cast Recording with Vanessa Williams. But both are wonderful.

re: Kiss of the spiderman OCR

I am sure it was a typo, but the show is Kiss of the Spiderwoman, not Spiderman. If you are looking to have Chita Rivera kissing Tobey Maguire hanging upside down in the rain you WILL be disappointed. re: Kiss of the spiderman OCR

I like it. It's Kander and Ebb so if you like their other musicals, you probably won't be disappointed.

The subject matter is certainly more complex than Chicago or Cabaret per say, but it's nice.

As a collector, I'd suggest getting your hands on both the Chita Rivera version and the out of print Vanessa Williams version that also has Brian Stokes Mitchell. Don't let out of print scare you, I recently picked it up for about $3.00.

There are some different cuts on the two albums that make both a must own in my opinion.

re: Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

I would get the OCR just to have the wonderful performance of Brent Carver on CD. His portrayal of Molina is amazing. On a whole the music is great and a good listen even if you are not familiar with the show. However, I do agree with the previous poster that if you like Chicago and Cabaret you will like this also. I also own the Vanessa Williams recording which does have some advantages over the OCR. It has more dialogue included plus it has Brian Stokes Mitchell as Valentin. His performances of "Marta" and "The Day After That" will not disappoint.

Yeah, Berlin, 1929. What could be complex about that?

re: Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

I figured someone would say something about that. :)

I started to say that the subject matter wasn't as mature as Cabaret and Chicago, but that obviously isn't correct as they are two of the more "mature" musicals around.

Complex probably wasn't the right choice of words either.

I guess just based on basic US school curriculum we are more aware of 1920s Berlin.

I'd argue that audiences were more aware of pre-war Berlin in 1966 when Cabaret originally opened than audiences are today, even if the Nazi Era is on school curriculums. Otherwise, the inappropriate torrents of laughter that greeted many moments of the recent Cabaret revival might not have occurred.

As you can tell from my sig below, I'm a huge fan of the show. re: Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

Both albums are worth owning for the many various reasons mentioned above. It's great fun to compare and contrast the various interpretations of the songs, and to see what each actor brings to the role. (And thank Heaven Herndon Lackey was able to reprise his role for the second recording and show off his brilliant performance as the Warden.) For my taste, however, the original has a bit more mystery and magic than the new cast recording.

Plus, the Vanessa Williams recording comes with too much reverb and distortion, and sounding like it was mixed in about two minutes.

re: Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

It's long been one of my favorite scores--actually, I'm going to be doing this show soon (finally). I highly recommend getting the Vanessa Williams recording. Williams sounds AWESOME on it, plus it has Broadway's best tenor (Howard McGillin) as Molina, and Broadway's best baritone (Brian Stokes Mitchell) as Valentin. How can you lose?

Plus, since you haven't seen the show before, the Williams recording, unlike the OBCR, has little snippets of book scenes on it, so you can kinda follow what's going on.

Ooh! Who will you be playing, Distinctive?? And where is the production?

Eager to see my fave show again...

re: Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

Are there any emotional songs in this show?

re: Kiss of the spiderwoman OCR

Yes, songs like "Marta" or "Anything For Him" are very emotional and highly theatrical. I think the show is not more complex than Chicago or Cabaret but I do think the score shows a stronger development of the concept musical, I'd say the title song is one of the best show tunes ever. I respect people's opinions but I personally think that the Original Cast Recording is better than the New Cast because Chita's performance is like none other she's done before, she constantly surprises you with her dark touch, her extreme sensuality, and the elegance in her acting and performance. Brent Carver is amazing as Molina, I love "Dressing Them Up," and I think "Anything For Him" sounds so great, especially when the three main actors sing at the same time.
